Review
`Review from previous edition The handbook delivers the facts to your fingertips... if I had 425g of luggage allowance to spare I would throw it in my rucksack!' S B Welby in Annals of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology

`A strong point of the handbook is its range of practical protocols developed by the WHO. These allow a structured approach to patient care and can be adapted to national policies and local conditions, used for easy reference, and disseminated appropriately.' John Hartley, University College London Hospital

`This is an invaluable resource... this book will answer all of your questions about tropical medicine in a concise manner and suggest a plain and easy to follow treatment plan.' Reviewer on Amazon

`... is an excellent resource for those working in low-resource circumstances. ... it attempts to provide common sense, rational and relevant information and advice (...)for those working within the tropics and in resource-poor settings, it is unique, practical and excellent resource and can be thoroughly recommended.' Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy 2005

`The pocket sized format, with robust plasticized cover ensuring its portability and durability, combined with concise yet highly informative coverage of a vast number of topics will ensure the continued success of the second edition of this popular handbook... I have no reservations in recommending the second edition of the OHTM to both students and practitioners of tropical medicine. Whether working in the tropics or in resource-rich settings, this handbook will certainly prove its worth.' Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 2005

`This is a well-written, reasonably comprehensive handbook of clinical tropical medicine that will be very useful for the practitioner in an isolated setting.' Doody's Journal May 2005

the tropical medicine bible...
By Jeffrey Edwards
I am currently working in a large medical NGO as an outpatient/emergency, chronic disease and nutritional feeding program medical supervisor in Africa. I use this handbook as a portable reference in my "go bag" at least several times a week. It covers a very wide variety of topics that are pertinent to anyone working in these challenging contexts. It is well organized and indexed.

Ran into a friend of mine heading to the Sudan to work for 6 months and he wished that he had a copy as well... This one is a no brainer, it will pay for itself 10x over and help save lives along the way. Just make sure you get it before you leave.

Intended for a medical practitioner, handy for a knowledgeable layperson
By Andrew Zipkin
I stumbled across the Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine in a bookshop in Lilongwe, Malawi earlier this month and picked up a copy. Rather than a medical professional, I am an archaeologist who works in rural Africa for 2-3 months each year and have repeatedly found myself playing doctor for members of my team in areas where medical care is hours away, if available at all. I have had wilderness first aid training, used to volunteer in a hospital ER, and have a strong biology background so I was able to understand 75-80% of the Oxford Handbook with careful reading and found it very useful, especially the chapters on malaria and tuberculosis, and the section on bilharzia. That being said, this guide is clearly written for doctors, nurses, or physicians assistants (or someone training for one of those careers) and NOT for the average traveler headed off to the developing world for the first time. If you are going on safari or are off to do a brief stint of volunteer work someplace in tropical Africa find yourself a good first aid guide and download the latest info from the CDC on malaria prophylaxis ([...])

great resource!
By Pink Sunflower
I used this book on a medical humanitarian mission to Africa because I didn't want to lug my huge textbooks around. It was the perfect size to fit in my carry on and fanny pack. The material was clear, concise, and up to date. I used it every day of my trip, and would recommend it to physicians or other health care professionals.
