Michael Amodei is executive editor of adolescent catechesis at Ave Maria Press. He has authored and edited several books in the area of Catholic religious education. He has been a parish director of religious education, a youth minister, and high school theology teacher. For more than twenty years, Amodei has been a coordinator and catechist helping teens prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Amodei has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in religious education from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

It was a good take on the genocide. Quite a difficult read as English is not the writer's first language. It was biased but so it should be. Well worth the read if you are interested in the topic and Turkish history and current affairs.

Please do an update

Power and Ideology in Education was first published in the same year as Bowles and Gintis' Schooling in Capitalist America and Willis' Learning to Labor. As such, it was part of a learned and exciting effort to place schooling in an inter-institutional context. Rather than focus on schooling as an autonomous institution charged with serving as an engine of thoroughgoing social reform, Karabel and Halsey's reader made clear that education was inextricably tied to other institutions, and that its potential for fostering social change had long been grossly exaggerated. Education was secondary to and served other, more powerful institutions, especially the economy.

The relentless school-bashing that began in the mid-1970's had little or nothing to do with the quality of public education. Instead, changes in labor markets fostered by out-sourcing, down-sizing, internationalization, and ongoing technological developments sharply reduced the number of jobs that paid a family's living wage and offered a decent benefit package. With the exception of a few authors on the left, students of schooling determinedly failed to see this and blamed education for undercutting the gains working people had made since the end of World War II. This misguided human capital theoretic mindset has persisted until today, even espoused by Barack Obama.

Karabel and Halsey's reader remains useful, but it is now badly dated. Halsey et al.'s 1997 reader is so topically diffuse and lacking in theoretical focus that it is not an ideal follow-up, but it's the best one available.

A must have to pass the exam

I have been a phlebotomist for over 30 years, working in hospitals, clinics, and research settings. I am also a registered Medical Technologist. So, I expected to be able to pass the phlebotomy certification exam easily last year. But, just to be safe, I bought this book and I am extremely thankful for it.

There were tests and test tubes I had never heard of -- do not see them in general practice. Also, although I know safe methods and practices for collecting blood, there were Best Practices guidelines that were useful to know for the exam.

Just as with any professional certification exam, there are a good number of questions that are more theoretical and principle oriented than applied practice, and knowing how to answer these gets a better score.

I passed with a good score and am certain that would not have been the case w/o studying this highly recommended book.

By the title, I thought that the student workbook was included as the 'package'. But instead, it is one book with additional practice sheets. I had to send it back. They should make the title more clear!

This should be in the hands of every Christian

I am a sinner saved by the grace of God who saved me and my husband when we were in our late 30s. It's been 12 years of living the Christian life, and we have spent most of it trying to learn what it truly means to love God will our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. We also have sought long and hard to replace every anti-Christian thought, motive, and behavior that characterized our lives with Christian ones, so that we could truly have a biblical worldview in every area of life and culture to act upon, in order to advance the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in Heaven. This journey has not been easy, as we have had to go beyond our local church borders to find the truly great teachers and mentors of the faith - past and present. Dr. Hammond has not only done this himself, but he has lived out the faith for years, and shared all he has learned with the rest of us. This Discipleship Handbook is a short summary, or umbrella overview, of all the elements of a robust Christian life that not only focuses on the vertical covenantal relationship with Christ through prayer and Bible-reading, but on the horizontal - how I am to love my brothers and sisters in fellowship with them, working with them to advance the Kingdom of God for His glory, and how I am to truly love my neighbour, unbelievers, by sharing the truth with them through my evangelistic efforts, with love being defined biblically, not merely sentimentally (as much of the church does today). This book covers both doctrinal areas such as the root of the Gospel (Christ's work on the cross and God's grace in the Covenant) and the fruit of the Gospel (the redemption of not only individuals, but institutions, families, cultures and nations via the application of the Law of God), as well as practical considerations such as movies, games, pornography, restitution, handling conflicts, etc. Now that I have such a great introduction and summary guide (that is so comprehensive, many pastors and elders could use a copy), I intend to hand out a copy to new parents, new converts, and humble brothers and sisters who just "know" there is more to the Christian faith than they've been taught to date. This book puts it all together. Why it's not in use in churches everywhere is beyond me. Start with this book, and then follow up with books listed in the bibliography (which are among the ones I've been reading over the last 12 years!).

Alternative to other introductory texts, both in content and style

The author stayed consistent with his aim to provide the student with a solid introduction to the understanding of randomness and , in particular, to give many examples and applications of a wide variety of situations. And for all sections that the reviewer has studied so far in more detail he finds, that this is nicely done. The book is an interesting alternative to other introductory texts on the subject, both in content and style.
