Review
'although its style and presentation are simple, the range of concepts is very great ... includes a range of stimulating and valuable thoughts about delegation' Personnel Management 'This book is required reading for CEOs or anyone responsible for designing and leading an organization. Requisite Organization is Elliott Jaques at his best. His ideas about organizations and people are down to earth and practical. We are using them.' A F Smith, President and Chairman, Gilbert Associates, Inc 'Elliott Jaques' concepts are more relevant today than ever before.' David Stroll, IT Marketing Manager - Services Industries in Europe, Digital Equipment Corporation 'It is one of the most creative, interesting, mind boggling, comprehensive works on organization I have ever read.' Dr Jerry Harvey, Professor of Organization and industrial Psychology - The George Washington University 'Every page overflows with principles to guide the reader's thinking and practical suggestions for implementation.' Trident (Merseyside Chamber of Commerce magazine) 'A remarkable book that should be read by anyone seriously interested in understanding what makes organizations work.' Long Range Planning

From the Back Cover
"Those rampaging against hierarchies today rarely stop to consider that hierarchy as a form of social organization occurs throughout nature. Instead of throwing rocks at hierarchies, it behooves us to try to understand why hierarchy might actually be important and the principles that might guide leaders in distinguishing functional from dysfunctional hierarchy.

"No one has done better thinking on this subject than Elliott Jaques. His Requisite Organization should be required reading for all managers genuinely interested in what-rather than simple tradition, established biases, and pure power politics-might truly JUSTIFY hierarchies capable of serving human and organizational goals."

Peter M. Senge

Center for Organizational Learning

MIT

"A critical application of Dr. Jaques' theories enables today's CEOs to organize their corporations correctly to utilize each employee's God given talents, and to promote and develop employees to their maximum potential unencumbered by bureaucracy, personalities and seniority issues. Dr. Jaques' system, in its eighth year of evolution at Commonwealth Aluminum, has allowed our company to run a system based upon a meritocracy where good performance leads to more opportunity and poor performance leads to removal from role. The employees perceive this as a fair system and the company has achieved significantly improved performance."

Mark Kaminski

President and CEO

Commonwealth Aluminum

"Using Requisite Organization principles in our management system has brought about a clarity of expectations that has been liberating to individuals and immeasurably beneficial to the company."

Dr. W. J. Privott

President and CEO

Novus International, Inc.

"This system is not 'flavour of the month'! It is a comprehensive, integrated, disciplined and rigorous system for all managers, which, when followed, makes such good sense. For any manager faced with the competing demands of running an organization, especially in times of uncertainty and change, the up-front investment of time and effort pays off-it simply makes life easier!"

Karen Robinson

General Manager

Ontario Hydro, Hydroelectric

"The 'magic' in Elliott Jaques' concepts is simply that they work in the field ... I have employed them daily in my work for over 6 years at both the corporate headquarters level of a major global company and, more recently, in its rapidly developing Asia operating region. Whether in 'Peoria' or the People's Republic of China, I wouldn't leave home without Elliott Jaques!"

Tom Helton

Vice President, Human Resources,

About the Author
Jaques is Visiting Research Professor in Management Science at George Washington University. He has been engaged in practical field work over the past 50 years in the development and real life testing of a comprehensive theory-based system of organizational structure and managerial processes, including fundamental developments in our understanding of the meaning of work. This system calls for sweeping changes in approach to organizational development work and in the evaluation and development of individuals engaged in work.

This development work has been carried out in projects in industry and commerce, in government, in social, educational and health services, in the Church of England and the U.S. Army. In this latter connection Elliott Jaques was awarded the Joint Staff Certificate of Appreciation by General Colin Powell on behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces for "outstanding contributions in the field of military leadership theory and instruction to all of the service departments of the United States."

Throughout his career, Jaques has continuously combined work with organizations and with individuals against the background of a B.A. Honors Science degree from the University of Toronto, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins Medical School, a Ph.D. in Social Relations from Harvard, and qualification as a psychoanalyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry. Author of 18 books, including Requisite Organization, 1996, Human Capability, 1994 (with K. Cason), and Executive Leadership, 1991 (with S. Clement).

Jaques served as a Major in the Canadian Army during WWII as liaison to the British Army War Officer Selection Board (WOSB). He remained in England after the war. He was a founding member of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations but quickly found that the group dynamics approach did not accurately reflect the reality of managerial accountabilities.1 In 1964, he was invited, as Head of School, to develop the School of Social Sciences at Brunel University in London, and its Research Institute of Organizational Studies.

During his career, Jaques has been responsible for a series of major discoveries in the social sciences, contributing in a significant way to our understanding of human nature and social institutions. The most well known is his formulation of the mid-life crisis, but others with very significant implications include: -

a method for objectively measuring the complexity of work roles, that in turn made possible the discovery of the unexpected existence of universal norms of fair pay for work, which upturns our current assumptions about human greed in relation to pay; -

an objective understanding of the nature of human potential capability, and of its maturation throughout life from infancy through old age, that will change the basis of developmental psychology, and our approach to education; -

the detailed specifications of a range of different organizational systems for industry and commerce, public service, churches, schools and universities, hospitals, and the military, that are requisite in the sense that they provide both for efficient work and for socially healthy settings for human relationships and individual growth.

These developments and many others will make a substantial contribution to the betterment of society and its values. (See "On Leaving the Tavistock Institute". Human Relations, Vol. #51, No. 3, 1998, pp. 251-257).

Fascinating theory, but I do not know how valid it is
By Jackal
I really wanted to like this book because at face value Jaques's theory seems valid. After having read it, I am not enthusiastic at all. The book is extremely managerial. There is no information about the evidence behind the author's requisite organisation theory. In a self-published, obscure book such evidence is necessary. Instead the book is quite repetitive down to the silly idea of having an illustration on every other page.

If any other of Jacques's books provide more empirical support for the theory, please send me a recommendation in the comments section. Much appreciated.

I am giving the book a generous three stars, because I still think his theory has validity.

UPDATE: The more academic coverage is found in A General Theory of Bureaucracy from 1976. I wish we would have some more recent evidence plus independent corroboration.

The key to organizational success
By James H. Dobbins
This is Elliott Jaques' description on how an organization should be structured so that the people are properly matched to their assignments, and are happy and productive doing their work. I am a huge fan of Elliott's work and I highly recommend this for any management team truly interested in making their organization the best it can be.

The Fiery Cross (Outlander), by Diana Gabaldon

The dazzling fifth volume of Diana Gabaldon’s extraordinary Outlander saga, featuring 18th-century Scotsman James Fraser and his 20th-century time-traveling wife, Claire Randall.

The year is 1771, and war is coming. Jamie Fraser’s wife tells him so. Little as he wishes to, he must believe it, for hers is a gift of dreadful prophecy—a time-traveler’s certain knowledge.

Born in the year of Our Lord 1918, Claire Randall served England as a nurse on the battlefields of World War II, and in the aftermath of peace found fresh conflicts when she walked through a cleftstone on the Scottish Highlands and found herself an outlander, an English lady in a place where no lady should be, in a time—1743—when the only English in Scotland were the officers and men of King George’s army.

Now wife, mother, and surgeon, Claire is still an outlander, out of place, and out of time, but now, by choice, linked by love to her only anchor—Jamie Fraser. Her unique view of the future has brought him both danger and deliverance in the past; her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through the perilous years ahead—or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes....

Grand, sweeping, utterly unforgettable, The Fiery Cross is riveting entertainment, a vibrant tapestry of history and human drama.

Amazon.com Review
The fiery cross, once used to summon Highland clans to war, now beckons readers to take up Diana Gabaldon's fifth installment in the Outlander series featuring the time-traveling Frasers. Historical fiction fans who have waited four long years since the publication of Drums of Autumn will thrill to Gabaldon's trademark detail and sensuality, both displayed liberally throughout the nearly 1,000 pages of The Fiery Cross. In this pre-Revolutionary War period, Claire Fraser and her husband, Jamie, have crossed oceans and centuries to build a life together in the bucolic beauty of North Carolina. But tensions both ancient and recent threaten not only Claire and James, but their daughter, Brianna, her new husband, Roger, and their infant son, Jemmy, as well as members of their clan. Gabaldon delivers on what she does best: poignant storylines, empathetic characters, meticulous detail, and searing passion. Savor every carefully chosen word, readers; it may be a long time until the next installment! --Alison Trinkle

From Library Journal
Get ready for Gabaldon. Starting in July, the publisher will set the stage for her latest by actively promoting her backlist titles featuring 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser. In the new novel, Jamie learns from his 20th-century wife that the American Revolution is coming.

Fascinating story. Vivid characters. Prose that sings. Wow.
By Terrence Walsh
Let's face it--over 22 THOUSAND people already reviewed this amazing book. It's been a bestseller for years--deservedly so.
Why write ANOTHER review?

First, to give author Diana Gabaldon her due. Not only did she write this long novel (plus seven more, plus some related novellas and such), and keep it endlessly entertaining with vivid characters and fresh plot twists galore. No, that was not enough. She had to write some of the most vivid sweet prose around. Over and over I found gems--dozens of them. They are the kind of verbal jewels that make any author gasp and say "I wish I wrote that." What a feast!

Second, to comment on my fellow readers. While reading OUTLANDER it seemed Gabaldon was everywhere. I recently transitioned six times through airports. EVERY airport had someone reading a Gabaldon paperback. Most readers had no idea what was going on around them because they were clearly a couple centuries back, in Scotland. I wonder how many missed their flights?

Third, to comment on copy editing (as I usually do). This is a long book. I did spot some errors in my Kindle version but, compared to many ebooks, not many errors. Room for improvement but overall pretty good--better than most, for sure.

The odds are slim that anyone will encounter this five-star review in the vast ocean of existing appreciation for this delightful book and its author. If, perchance, a live person actually reads this review, please let me know with a "helpful" vote. I'll know it's a good day to buy a lottery ticket.

Stories to be reread
By Celia
I first read the series several years ago. With the the portability and ease of reading electronically I am reliving the stories of Clare and Jamie and Brianna and Roger et al again.

How sad that people clamor over the 50 Shades of .... books. This is so much more fulfilling. As "romance" novels have become more bold and inclusive of explicit dialog I find myself skipping through that. Been there done that. Insert Tab A into Slot B... etc. etc. borING. I want the emotion and feeling of the relationship.

Diana delivers the emotion, sights, sounds, smells, triumphs and failures with her words. She always finds alliterative and clever phrasing to bring everything alive - whether it is a trip across the sea or a dangerous encounter or mundane every tasks or Clare and Jamie enjoying the delights of each other intimately. The characters live and breathe.

There are not many books I reread. I am glad I chose to reread the Outlander Series. There is so much richness and depth I had forgotten. I also note things I missed the first time which deepen the experience of the stories.

These are excellent stories with something for most everyone.

Difficult novel to review
By Kate MacKay
I think I am probably the last person on the planet to read Outlander, but after many of my friends recommended it, I decided it was about time I read the novel. The story follows 1940s nurse Claire Randall, who while on a second honeymoon in Scotland travels back in time to the 1740s. There she meets Jamie Fraser, a handsome and noble young Highlander, becomes embroiled in clan politics, and discovers just how awful the English are. She also ends up wed to Jamie and eventually falling in love with him.

This was a difficult novel for me to review, because for every aspect I liked about it, there was something I disliked. A few examples:
1. The writing is quite good. There are passages with amazing descriptions; there are paragraphs packed with emotion and brilliant word-weaving. And there are long passages that do little to nothing to advance the plot and feel like filler.

2. Jamie Fraser’s character is extremely well-drawn. He is complex and comes alive off the pages as an honourable, endearing man despite his flaws. I understand his motivations and why he acts as he does. Claire, on the other hand, I never felt I understood as well, which is odd since the novel is written in first person. She seemed a bit inconsistent, at times acting the perfect 18th Century lady, but at others acting more modern than a woman of the 1940s. I also never felt as sympathertic to her, especially because sometimes her actions were foolish and served to endanger herself, Jamie, and others. She is supposed to be intelligent and well-travelled. She should understand that as a stranger in a strange land one should try to follow local customs and listen to the local guides to avoid calamity.

3. I like novels with action and adventure. This novel had plenty of that. I also like a good villain and Black Jack Randall was a fantastic villain who I loved to hate. I don’t mind reading about blood, beatings, or even torture—if they advance the plot or are used for character development. I do mind such things when they are used wantonly, seeming to feed a fetish rather than to serve the story. There is plenty of blood and pain in this novel, especially in the latter part. I think, however, that the same ending could have been achieved without the gratuitous sexual assault.

4. And concerning the sex—there was a lot of it in this novel. Sex is another thing I don’t mind reading about, but it should be used to advance the plot or illuminate something important about the characters. While most of the sex scenes were well-written and several were vital to the storyline, some did feel like filler.

Overall, I like this book. I plan on keeping it in my library. Unfortunately, the truly amazing aspects of it are tempered by numerous drawbacks.

How Asia Was Lost
By Michael Tozer
Between the covers of John T. Flynn's excellent book, "While You Slept", the discerning reader will find a key to one of history's greatest mysteries: how Asia was lost to communism. For herein, Flynn reveals the machinations of the many communists and communist sympathizers within the government of the United States, and the print media who so shaped American government policy that China tragically fell to the Soviet onslaught.

I had the good fortune to read this important and excellent book right after having read Whittaker Chambers' "Witness". And it is remarkable how we see the similar characters playing leading roles, such as convicted Soviet agents Alger Hiss and Harry Dexter White. It is stunning that these Soviet agents played such key roles within the government of the United States. And it is equally remarkable that their roles have been so little discussed by our court historians, who have no real and plausible explanation for the fall of China.

Flynn writes beautifully. The book is a wonder, and a joy. We strongly recommend it to all who would know justice and love mercy, while yet there is time.

"Willing and eager partners in ... the sacrifice of China"
By Andrew S. Rogers
While not perhaps as memorable or timeless a work as his "As We go Marching" or the invaluable "The Roosevelt Myth," this 1951 book by John T. Flynn is nevertheless an important one. It's also strangely timely: some of the issues and personalities surrounding the question of "Who lost China?" have been raised again in Ann Coulter's recent "Treason." Coulter readers interested in exploring the question more fully could do far worse than to track down a copy of this title.
John T. Flynn, of course, was a tireless slayer of sacred cows, and one of the central figures of the anti-Rooseveltian, anti-New Deal coalition now remembered (by some) as the Old Right. This book deals largely with the question of Communist domination of Asia, in particular China and Korea. But most of the attention is focused in the U.S., and particularly upon the men -- some dupes, some Comsymps (ah, for the good old days of Red-baiting language), and a few dedicated Soviet agents -- in Washington and elsewhere who made that domination possible.
A key part of Flynn's thesis is that the print, film, and radio media were deliberately employed to soften Americans' natural opposition to Communist totalitarianism, and to prepare them for the idea of Soviet "partnership" in the post-World War II era. A large section of the book is filled with examples of pro-Communist propaganda in all three media, and the silencing (contra the "McCarthyism" myth) of critics of the Russian or Chinese Communists. In partnership with the pro-Communist agitprop (another nearly forgotten term!) were the missteps and blunders committed by political leaders, particularly FDR, Marshall, and Acheson. Truman, too, receives his fair share of blame. But as Flynn notes, most of the seeds of "our tragedy in Asia" were planted during the FDR years.
Does any of this matter any more? Flynn's lessons about the propagandistic power of the media are certainly still relevant and worthy of deep study. And though the guns are silent, China and Korea are certainly still in the headlines. Unraveling the mythology of the rise of Communism in Asia is essential for grappling with the situation there today. Perhaps most important of all is taking the time yet again to knock the pins out from under the vastly inflated reputations of FDR and Truman. Few men have ever performed that valuable service better than John T. Flynn. He deserves to be remembered, and read, with our thanks.

About the Author

David Wolber is a leader in App Inventor education and teaching beginners how to program their phones and tablets. His focus is empowering artists, designers, kids, women, men, humanity majors, business students—makers of all types—to add coding to their creative arsenals. His teaching materials, video screencasts, and course-in-a-box are available at appinventor.org, and his students have been chronicled in articles of the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Wired Magazine.

David is a professor at the University of San Francisco. He taught one of the first App Inventor courses in 2009 as part of a Google pilot and has been teaching and working with the App Inventor teaching community ever since. His teaching materials on the Google and MIT sites, and on appinventor.org, have provided the first introduction to coding for thousands of new app builders, and his course-in-a-box materials have served as a template for many App Inventor courses at the K-12 and university levels. David recently took a sabbatical at MIT to work with co-author Hal Abelson and contribute to the development of App Inventor 2. He also is contributing to the Mobile Computer Science Principles (mobile-csp.org) course for the new Advanced Placement (AP) course is US high schools.

Harold (Hal) Abelson, a professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, has a longstanding interest in using computation as a conceptual framework in teaching. He has played a key role in fostering MIT institutional educational technology initiativeI, and is a founding director of Creative Commons and Public Knowledge. Hal’s book, Turtle Geometry, written with Andrea diSessa in 1981, presented a computational approach to geometry that has been cited as "the first step in a revolutionary change in the entire teaching/learning process."

Ellen Spertus is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Mills College, where she has taught with App Inventor, and a Senior Research Scientist at Google, where she was one of the App Inventor developers. She and her work have been written about in Wired, USA Today (which described her as "a geek with principles"), and in The New York Times (as one of three "women who might change the face of the computer industry"). In addition to her many technical publications, her writings have appeared in the book She's Such a Geek: Women Write about Science, Technology, and Other Nerdy Stuff and in the magazines Technology Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, Odyssey: Adventures in Science, and Glamour.

Liz Looney is a senior software engineer at Google, where she helped develop App Inventor and is a member of the Robotics Task Force. She has over 20 years of experience in creating programming tools and holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from The University of New Hampshire.

For Paper-Addicts ...
By Dr. E
Let's say you've never heard of the website (and, if you are reading this, I doubt that's the case ... but let's just say that). If this is the case, then the text provides easy-to-follow instructions from the simple to the sublime (want to add a sound? it's there. want to design a quiz? it's there. want to add animation. yep, it's there). Moreover, I love the additions of the "Test Your App" boxes and the "variations" entries (some of which may not always be so obvious ... pretty cool).

The book itself itself is published in color and the images are clear and ease to follow. Likewise, the text is concise and well-edited.

So, enough stalling ... yes, the only "downside" to this text is that most of this is available at the website. So, basically this is relegated to paper-addicts (hey, I bought the PostSecret and Awkward Family Photos books even though I know those websites inside-out).

Therefore, if you are crazy about physical books and need more information on creating (basic) apps ... this might be for you!

You may want to check out the App Inventor website and forums before buying the book
By Brian
The App Inventor 2 book explains how to use the App Inventor 2 website to develop an Android application. You'll go to the ai2.appinventor.mit.edu website to actually develop your app and then you will transfer it to your Android phone or tablet (Note that you have to have a google account to use the App Inventor website.) App Inventor 2 states that it supports Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) or higher, but there were postings in the forum which indicated that there may be problems with Android Kitkat (4.4) and Lollipop (5.0) versions.

You develop your app in the Designer and Blocks Editor on the App Inventor 2 website. During the development process you'll need to test your app. There are 3 options for testing: 1) Download the App Inventor Companion App to your Android device and then connect your computer to it by wi-fi. (Note: If you are using a desktop computer connected to the internet by a cable your desktop computer may not have wifi.) 2) You can install the Emulator on your computer to test your apps. For Windows and Linux you also need to install the aiStarter software and update it. or 3) You can connect your Android device by USB cable, which is not recommended for Windows because it is "tricky" due to driver issues. You have to scrounge up the appropriate drivers for your device(s).

Following the examples in the book is pretty easy for the most part. However people who have never written computer code and are not familiar with some programming concepts (such as variables, databases, events, etc) may feel a little challenged. Also there are some things which did not seem to be the most intuitive. For example, when you want to assign a numeric value to a variable, you don't just type in a number. The variable has an open socket and you have to go to the Math drawer and grab a number block.

I wanted to create an app to change the way notifications are displayed on the lock screen of my phone (Moto X). However after looking at App Inventor 2 and the forums I decided to just wait another month or two for the Lollipop update (which has better notifications).

A must have book.
By Amazon Customer
"App Inventor 2, Create your own Android Apps" has been written by those involved in the creation of this program. It caters for both new and experienced users alike and is a valuable reference.

The book is divided into two parts. The first 200 plus pages comprise a series of interesting projects which become progressively more complex. In doing so each important aspect of "App Inventor" is covered. Possible improvements are posed at the conclusion of each project. I recommend that you do these exercises.

The second section, "Inventor's Manual", explains the architecture behind" App Inventor". Each concept is illustrated with examples which range from simple to advanced. The advanced concepts included persistent data storage, animation, global positioning, and sensor interaction.

The book is well illustrated and all examples are clearly explained. In my opinion it is a must have book.

This book - now in its fifth edition - contains thoroughly revised chapters dealing with the ideas and writers of the first 200 years of the subject, and has incorporated any significant new material. The later sections dealing with the last 50 years or so have been much expanded and updated in the light of current developments relating particularly to controversies on economic policy. Most recent developments, such as the "new classical macroeconomics", including the theory of rational expectations, have also been taken into account.

An Essential Read
By Alexander David Fortune
Roll skillfully encompasses the history of economic thought in minute detail from Plato and Aristotle to the post-Keynesian economists. That said, by necessity, the book is intricate, dense, and progresses slowly. An important work, a book I'll go back to time and time again, and an essential read for anyone interested in economics and politics. Albeit, one which is more like having to eat your vegetables as a child.

This book, authored by E.K. Hunt, was described in a website editorial which specified Baron Eric Roll as the author. I ordered the book in response to that erroneous description.

Scots in the West Indies 1707-1857 Vol 2, by David Dobson, Kit Dobson

This book began as Jean Stephenson's effort to validate the family tradition that her great-great-grandparents emigrated from Belfast to South Carolina under the leadership of Covenanter Presbyterian minister William Martin in 1772. The author was not only able to authenticate the crux of the story, but, in the process, to place nearly 500 Scotch-Irish families in South Carolina on the eve of the Revolutionary War.
Genealogists will want to pore over the land evidences assembled by the author from entries found in the Council Journal, namely, authorizations, survey abstracts, wills, deeds and other records which demonstrate where each family settled, or was entitled to settle. The families, which are grouped under the vessel they traveled in, are identified by the name of the household head, names of spouse and children, number of acres surveyed, county, location of the nearest body of water and the names of abutting neighbor, and the source of the information.
