Takes social engineering to the next level

In his first book, Social Engineering: The Art of Human Hacking, author Christopher Hadnagy wrote the definitive book on social engineering. In it, he detailed the entire lifecycle of social engineering and pretty much everything you needed to know on the topic.

In his just released follow-up Unmasking the Social Engineer: The Human Element of Security, he takes social engineering up a few levels. While the first book was more of a practical introduction to the topic, this is an advanced title for the serious practitioner. There is a lot of interesting information and research provided in the book. But the challenge here is not just reading it; rather it is in mastering its practical use.

The book is meant to show the reader how do read a person's body language and facial expressions. By understanding them, it makes social engineering easier, but also defending against social engineering attacks easier also. If you can understand how an attacker uses non-verbal behavior, then you can better defend yourself and your organization against them.

While the first book was about a standard approach to social engineering, this new title can be seen as advanced social engineering. The premise of the book is that in order to effectively and fully deal with and defend against social engineering threats, an understanding of how non-verbal communications is used is important.

The book notes that much of our everyday communications are nonverbal. And as its name implies, nonverbal communication is the process of communicating and understanding messaging via mechanisms such as touch, posture, body language, eye movement, eye contact and more.

Since social engineers and scammers use these techniques, it is important to understand them in order to defend against them.

The books forward is written by Dr. Paul Ekman. Ekman is a renowned psychologist whose career is deeply enmeshed in non-verbal communications. Hadnagy's approach is based significantly on methods Ekman developed, much of it starting over 35 years ago. As to Dr. Ekman, he was ranked in the 100 most cited psychologists of the 20th-century.

Of the books 4 parts, half of the book is in part 2 - Decoding The Language of the Body. The 4 chapters in the section particularize the various aspects of how movements around different body parts can be interpreted.

While an interesting read, the techniques detailed in the book are quite complex. Whereas it is often difficult to understand what people say, understanding their non-verbal communications is not a trivial endeavor. Readers should therefore not read this 200 page book and expect to come out experts in non-verbal communications.

For the serious reader who wants to understand everything they can about the topic of social engineering, Unmasking the Social Engineer: The Human Element of Security should one of the references in their reading arsenal.

This is a unique book that blends body language research with social engineering.

SURPRISE NO.1: The author avoids using body language myths and generalizations e.g crossing arms and legs means closed and uncrossed means open. This book is more detailed, the author goes into the theory and research of body language in a way that kept me hooked until the end

SURPRISE NO.2: Although the book is about the human element of security, the information was relevant to many human relationships: co-workers, negotiators, parent to child etc.

WARNING: Don't expect an ordinary book about body language. Yes, the book breaks body language down into sections and examines different parts separately. But it also links non verbal behaviour with how people process emotions and how it's used in techniques such as hijacking the amygdala, nonverbal conversational signals, elicitation and other social engineering skills.

It made me aware that I was seeing business people, politicians, and salesmen etc. using similar techniques. In my experience, for people who are interested in body language, it's one of the rare books that made me set everything aside in order to read it.

I'm very familiar with the author's passion for Social Engineering and all aspects related to it, due to being an avid listener of the Social Engineering podcast. Of course having enjoyed his previous book, I picked this one up right away… well I couldn’t put it down. The main take away i got from the book was realizing this is not just for social engineers, there are a great many practical aspects of non-verbals that apply to daily life; from being more aware of detecting the emotions of loved ones, to noticing the non-verbal tells of those in your professional life... and of course, learning how to become a better human hacker. The illustrations / photos were great, something you can't get from just a written or verbal description. My only complaint is some items were so interesting, I wish they were gone into with more details. The references to the research and sources were well documented, something many similar books lack. Also, for those new to social engineering / influence there are quite a few reviews of the basics yet done in such a way as to be concise and not bore those already familiar... personally I found those items valuable as a quick refresher. Again, great book and really the only one I know of that concentrate on the of non-verbals as applied to social engineering. This is an essential read for the penetration tester / security professional that goes on engagements with human interaction.

About the Author

Dr. Eric B. Shiraev is a professor, researcher, and author. He took his academic degrees at St. Petersburg University in Russia and completed a post-doctoral program in the United States at UCLA. He served at various positions at St. Petersburg University, NVCC, Oregon State University, George Washington University, and George Mason University. His research interests are diverse. He is an author, co-author, and co-editor of twelve books and numerous publications in the fields of global studies, history of science, cross-cultural studies, and political psychology. In his publications, he develops a distinct multi-disciplinary approach to analyze human behavior. Dr. David A. Levy has extensive experience as a teacher, therapist, writer, and researcher. He is Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where he has been teaching graduate courses since 1986. He received his B.A. degree in theater arts from UCLA, a M.A. degree in psychology from Pepperdine University, a second M.A. degree in psychology from UCLA, and his Ph.D. in psychology from UCLA, where he specialized in social psychology, with minors in psychological assessment and personality psychology. He served as Visiting Professor of Psychology in the Soviet Union, where he delivered lectures and workshops in psychology and psychotherapy at Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State University, the Leningrad Academy of Science, and the Bekhterev Psychoneurological Institute. He was honored as a Harriet and Charles Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellow at Pepperdine, and was a recipient of the Shepard Ivory Franz Distinguished Teaching Award and Charles F. Scott Fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Levy holds professional licenses both in psychology and in marriage and family therapy. He has worked in a wide range of private practice and inpatient psychiatric settings, he has supervised clinical interns, and he has utilized his expertise in psychological testing (particularly the MMPI) in forensic cases.

His numerous theoretical and empirical research studies have been published in scientific journals and presented at professional conferences. His book, "Tools of Critical Thinking: Metathoughts for Psychology," garnered widespread acclaim in both academic and clinical settings for its innovative approaches to improving thinking skills. Levy co-authored (with Eric Shiraev) "Cross-Cultural Psychology: Critical Thinking and Contemporary Applications," which became an internationally best-selling textbook. Levy is the author of "Family Therapy: History, Theory, and Practice," which was the first textbook on the topic available to Russian readers. His Levy Optimism-Pessimism Scale (LOPS) has been utilized internationally in a variety of research contexts, and he is a member of the Board of Editors for the Journal of Humanistic Psychology.

Levy is also the author of numerous satirical articles, including "The Emperor's Postmodern Clothes: A Brief Guide to Deconstructing Academically Fashionable Phrases for the Uninitiated," "How to Be a Good Psychotherapy Patient," "Psychometric Infallibility Realized: The One-Size-Fits-All Psychological Profile," "Stinks and Instincts: An Empirical Investigation of Freud's Excreta Theory," and "A Proposed Category for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM): Pervasive Labeling Disorder."

This text has become an invaluable tool for the courses I teach in cross-cultural psychology, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Although many books purport to emphasize the integration of critical thinking skills with cross-cultural psychology, this is the only one that does so successfully. My students consistently rate it favorably, and I give it my highest recommendation.

I found this text not only easy to read but enjoyable to read. Its authors are natural storytellers who guide readers through the thornier questions of cross-cultural psychology (and psychotherapy) with care and candor. The authors' expertise is indisputable, their authority never in doubt.

The book that I ordered was supposed to be in "like new" condition and I was very disappointed when my order finally arrived. There is cardstock or something taped to the covers both back and front and on the side binding. This is blocking out all of the information on the book cover except for the cover photo and a small description on the back. This was not what I expected to recieve. The reason I gave it 2 stars is because it did arrive in the expected time frame. However, the package was almost completely ripped open by the time I got it. Im very unhappy woth this order

Great undergraduate human aging text!

I have used this text in my own courses and students love it! It is very well written and the authors are clearly experts on human aging. Senior View sections provide the perspective of a Senior on some of the issues discussed in the text. I recommend this book to anyone teaching an undergraduate human aging course. It is particularly helpful within psychology but has a multidisciplinary bent at times that makes it palpable in a health aging course as well.

English / Spanish Marcos Chicot was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1971. He has a BA in clinical and occupational psychology as well as in economics. He wrote his first novel, Oscar, in 1997. In 1998, he wrote Gordon's Diary, which won the Francisco Umbral Award. Two years later, he wrote a novel for young readers that won the Rotary Club International Literary Award. He has been a finalist in short story and novel contests such as the Max Aub Award, the City of Badajoz Prize, the Juan Pablo Forner Award, and the Planeta Prize. Very Good Read...

What appears at the outset to be a straightforward murder-mystery tale becomes, by the end, a saga of power, betrayal, and bitter hatred balanced with historically rich and skillful writing and a little romance thrown in for good measure.

The historical significance of Pythagoras’ contributions to society lies far beyond just math and outside of scholars and history buffs, few are aware of the details of his saga. In his book, Marcos Chicot provides us with many of these details. He spent years conducting research for this book and, particularly in the latter half of the story, the reader will be rewarded by his effort.

It's an engaging story with great twists and turns, some of which seemed far-fetched, yet which I learned after reading were based on historical fact. I’m sure you’ll know what I mean if you read the book. All-in-all, a very good read, and as one other reviewer said, this would sincerely make a great movie.

Throughout my 50 years as a mathematics professor, I have read a great deal about Pythagoras, and of course his significance as a contributor to the vast field of knowledge. When I saw this title, I was drawn to this story. It is interesting how Marcos Chicot used this period of history to write an interesting story. He even gives credit to the Egyptians and Asians if only in passing statements. I have used the lives of Pythagoras, Archimedes, Galileo,DesCartes, and many others in my lectures to prove or accentuate ideas regarding geometry, functions, and other concepts. The story even relates to the discovery of pi to 4 decimal places. It also discusses irrational numbers. I thought it was quite clever and beautiful really, as to the methods this author used to discuss these foundational concepts of mathematics and incorporate them into the story.
This book certainly could appeal to a wide audience, even to the idea of women in the field of mathematics in the lives of Theano, Pythagoras wife and his daughter as well. One who is just interested in philosophy or in the moral conduct of a personal life. Everything is here in this novel. I did not find the violent scenes disgusting given the times. I found this to be sort of a creative non fiction or as I like to call it faction. It really is no different than some of our stories in America, let us say using the revolutionary war or civil war as a backdrop. Nevertheless, the math concepts are true, real, and appropriate. In short it is a very cool book. I wish I could know Spanish well enough to read it in its native production. I am sure a little bit of its beauty in language gets lost in translation. interesting setting and background

I was attracted to this book by the fact that a)I love historical fiction; b) knew nothing about Pythagoras except the triangle thing; and c)the Spanish speaking world highly recommended it. I didn't know Pythagoras (who I had always assumed was a math geek) had a whole philosophical sect gathered around him. As a character in the book, I found Pythagoras to be a bit Ghandi-esque, but at other times Chicot would reveal aspects of Pythagoras that were not just politcally astute, but downright aggressive. His desire to unite the world with his teachings has created a good number of enemies and as Pythagoras plans for his successor, the candidates start dropping dead. The main protaganist is called in to find the murderer. There are several plot twists in discovering "whodunit". I found the first 4-5 chapters interesting, a big chunk of the middle moved too slowly, and as events heated up in the last 1/3 of the book it moved really well. It was a clever plot, how Chicot noted enemies from several directions who could have been the culprit but soon it became obvious they couldn't be, and how events were manipulated and swirled to builld to a climax.

It was refreshing that Chicot included several articles in the midst of the narrative to past in certain articles from an old mathematics encyclopedia regarding such subjects as HOW pi was calculated, what irrational numbers exactly are, and so on. These articles are like extended footnotes, but I found them interesting as they related the early discoveries of these concepts. Not being a math whiz, it answered some questions for me.

The reason I couldn't give it 5 stars was the love interest didn't interest me and the slow pace of the middle of the book.

First How-To Book for Implementing Big Data & IoT Projects

This book fills a gap for organizations looking to gain value from Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT). There are reports that come out from time to time about companies struggling to find value from Big Data or projects not proceeding beyond a Pilot phase. At the same time, there are many organizations that get tremendous value from the emerging technologies that underpin these concepts. The disconnect between organizations is become some have taken the right approach to use these technologies - solve a problem, while other organizations often are using it as a solution looking for a problem.

This book provides a very prescriptive methodology on how to become the former organization as opposed to the latter. While not every organization uses this same approach, it will get you to the end result, and it will help avoid some of the pitfalls that may come up along the way. For example, there is often a question of how these new technologies integrate with existing technology. Or where will the skills come from?

The methodology that the book provides is based on the best practices of Information Architecture so it can provide value even outside the realm of Big Data and IoT. That being said, some of the value of the book is walking through examples of the methodology being used with Big Data and IoT use cases and examples.

I think the combination of Information Architecture and Big Data/IoT is the unique value that the book provides but I would still like to see it go further. I'm not sure the best way to do that (more examples, real world case studies, a little deeper content) but I think it would make the great message even more impactful.

If you are looking at embarking on a Big Data/IoT journey, you need to read this book. It will provide a lot of clarity up front and help you avoid some of the pitfalls that other organizations have encountered. I have seen the outcome of this approach work at organizations so I know it's not based on theory but the outcome of many successful projects.

This book aims to show you how to implement a Big Data and Internet of Things project, with the subtitle “Enterprise Information Architecture for A New Age”.

This book guides you through the steps required to analyse and extend an existing architecture (based on a data warehouse), to one involving Big Data. The content is project/analysis focused rather than technical.

The book is targeted at “... enterprise architects and information architects, as well as anyone tasked with designing and building these solutions or concerned about the ultimate success of such projects”. Some knowledge of IT systems/architecture is needed, since various terms are used without being defined (e.g. third normal form).

The book is relatively small, containing around 180 working pages, split over 8 chapters.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Big Data Solutions and the Internet of Things

The book opens with a look at how we arrived at Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT), giving some history, and explaining that much existing technology is still appropriate in new solutions (e.g. databases). The importance of getting business buy-in is emphasised for successful projects, else the errors of the past may repeat with the newer architectures.

Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and data marts are discussed, outlining their advantages and disadvantages, before noting that increasing volumes of unstructured data required a new approach, involving NoSQL databases and Hadoop. NoSQL databases store data that doesn’t map neatly into the traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS). The 4 main types of NoSQL databases are outlined (i.e. key-value, column, document, graph), before looking at scalability and high availability.

Hadoop is the most popular Big Data platform. The importance of Google’s technology papers is noted in the development of Hadoop’s distributed file system (HDFS), and its distributed parallel programming algorithm (MapReduce). Next, many of Hadoop’s popular tools are highlighted (e.g. Hive, Sqoop). It’s expected that a growing number of sensors and devices will provide steaming data, this is the heart of the Internet of Things. This voluminous data will drive Big Data processing.

The chapter ends with an overview of the methodology for developing and deploying projects (this is what this book is really about). The popular ‘The Open Group Architectural Framework’ (TOGAF) model is briefly examined, noting it forms the basis of the authors’ own methodology – which is then outlined (with each of the 7 stages forming a subsequent book chapter).

This chapter provides a useful overview of the history and drivers of IT systems, culminating in the current Big Data and IoT systems. The iterative methodology for developing and deploying projects is outlined, showing you what to expect from the rest of the book. In essence the book is about defining the current system, defining your required system, and then taking steps to bridge the two.

The chapter is generally easy to read, with helpful diagrams to support the text. It touches a wide-range of topics but only in a cursory manner. Various vendor products are identified in passing. Some knowledge of IT systems/architecture is needed since various terms are used but not defined (e.g. ACID, named node) – perhaps links to further information could have been included. These traits apply to the whole book.

Conclusion

This book aims to show you how to implement a Big Data and Internet of Things project, and succeeds. It contains details of the steps to undertake to analyse and extend an existing architecture (based on a data warehouse) to one based on Hadoop technologies. The emphasis is on project planning and analysis rather than technology.

It is easy to read, with good explanations, and useful diagrams to support the text. The outline agendas and questions included should prove useful in creating your own systems. The book is based on a seven-step methodology, which itself is based on the popular ‘The Open Group Architectural Framework’ (TOGAF).

Many sections can be read without reference to Big Data and IoT, in which case it reads like a good traditional system analysis book, except it’s more agile and less comprehensive - since various steps in traditional methodologies are omitted. Undoubtedly the book oversimplifies the details, but does so to provide an achievable approach.

Some knowledge of IT systems/architecture is needed to get the most out of this book, since various terms are used without being defined (e.g. third normal form, ACID, RDDs, named node). Perhaps links to further information could have been included - I note there is an appendix of references, but these are not annotated.

The book’s title in itself is misleading, this is a book largely about analysis and design. I suspect Big Data and Internet of Things were added because they’re the latest ‘must have’ technologies, and of course they sell...

I enjoyed this book, it took me back to my 1987 SSADM analysis course! The book should certainly help people analyse and design systems (not just Big Data ones).

About the Author
MARYANN CUSIMANO LOVE is an associate professor of politics at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on international relations and US foreign policy. Cusimano Love also teaches courses at the Pentagon. The author serves on several boards and committees: The U.S. Catholic Bishops' International Justice and Peace Committee, where she advises the bishops on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy, and engages in advocacy with the U.S. Government on international issues of concern to the Catholic Church. The Advisory Board of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network with Notre Dame University's Kroc Institute of Peace, a network of academics and practitioners from around the world that seeks to enhance the study and practice of peacebuilding. The board and Advocacy Committee of Jesuit Refugee Services, an international refugee relief and advocacy group active in over 50 countries, with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. Cusimano Love is also a columnist for the magazine "America", and has served as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations project on homeland security, and as a participant in the Religion and Foreign Policy Initiative. She holds a B.A. from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, an M.A. from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. The author lives on the Chesapeake Bay outside of Washington, DC, with her husband Richard and three young children, Maria, Ricky, and Ava, who inspire her best-selling children's books.

Pros & Cons

Although a good, informative book, not a quick read. Great to use if it is being used for a class to do Chapter-by-Chapter readings. It was also very comprehensive in the fact that it informs you of what the key terms in the book are and their definition then continues on to tell you exactly what the problem is with this and suggestions on how we, as a global society, can go about fixing it. She also does a great job of tying all of the concepts together.
