Excellent Read

Wonderful story!! A hero who falls in love with a young girl's enthusiasm and vitality and waits to have her until she comes of age! The hero was "heroic," but the heroine was such a wonderfully strong and vibrant character. I hate it when the heroine is a simpering miss who waits around for the hero to rescue her. It was very refreshing to see her take matters into her own hands. I kept imagining women from countries like Iraq or Iran might be going through similar plights -- strong women fighting to change the way they are treated in those countries. The heroine was very inspiring and the hero was heroic because he was willing to forgo long standing traditions of his kinsmen's treatment of their women. The storyline was great, the romance was great! A definite keeper!

No cheese here!

This is the most intelligent and non-cheesy Sheik romance that you're ever likely to find. Set around 1800, it's the story of Princess Tess of a fictional Balkan country who marries Galen Sheik of a desert tribe. The marriage takes place pretty early in the book, so this may count as a marriage-of-convenience plot if that's your thing (or not). Tess is no unwilling victim - she's given the chance to exert some control over her life and future and she goes for it. Galen has his own schemes but finds himself falling for his wife.

The wonderful hero and heroine set this romance apart from many others. Galen is hot-tempered and just plain hot. He feels his "barbaric" blood keenly and controls himself rigidly. You get the impression of a volcano trying to keep itself from exploding. Alpha and sexy, he's also very protective towards Tess. He finds he desires her a lot more than he thought he would. He waits though until she's ready for the marital bed and (great hero!) doesn't even look at another woman in the meantime.

Tess is a strong and vibrant young woman, overflowing with vitality and enthusiasm but never dumb. A virgin but thankfully no prude or shrinking violet in the bedchamber. She shows her bravery and quick wits when the villain abducts Galen's sister. She actually has a sound plan and her playacting is delicious. Of course the hero still saves her in the nick of time. This is a romance after all :-)

The sexual tension is very strong leading up to the consummation. Actual sex scenes are rather few and not particularly graphic after the first. The story was so engrossing though, I really didn't miss them much. What I liked best was that the hero and heroine were actually heroic. They both rise above their times, and in the hero's case his inner "barbarian". Galen has a purpose - to unite the warring tribes into 1 law-abiding country. Tess aims to improve the lot of women in the new country. Galen refuses to whip her when she goes too far and he's expected to punish her. He finds another way to make her scream ;-) Ah we should all be "punished" so!

Desert passion

This is a well-written romance with likeable, strong-willed, and heroic characters. For those who have read Johansen's other books set in Sedikhan, this is the story of Galen Ben Rashid and Tess Rubinoff - who start off the dynasty. The novel transports you in time and place.

Needs better use of the language such as English

I've been making Excel models on and off for almost 20 years. I've wished for someone to write this book badly. And now someone has!

It would be difficult to overstate the violence this book does to the English language. But I'll say this: I now have a handy rejoinder to anyone who ever claims that the Americans are killing the language. The author, Alastair Day, is from the U.K.

The net result: This book is impossible to read. It's ironic, since the entire book is geared toward helping us make our Excel presentations more, well, presentable; the author seems to have a decent understanding of how to lay out data in an attractive, informative way. Yet the book itself is rambling, vague, imprecise, confusing, and ultimately pointless.

With mangled sentences on every page, no single example can suffice, but here's one anyway:

"Another feature is the sign for the cash flows. You make fewer errors if you consider money out to be negative and money in to be positive. It means that you never have to add cash flows rather than inserting more complex positive and negative statements. In this example, the depreciation is negative in the workings; however, the expenditure saves tax so this is positive."

You might think that this makes more sense in context. I assure you: There is no context.

The book needs an editor.

Very Difficult Read and hard to follow examples

I would not recommend this book because it was very difficult to follow the examples demonstrated in the book. The author jumps around frequently and does not lay out the examples in step by step format.

I have been using Excel VBA for 10+ years and still could not figure out how most of these examples were put together.

Nice Sheets but Impossible to find out How to Create it?

This is the kind of book that will give you hard time trying to find out how the author really built the model. I felt the author is so proud of his work that he kept for himself the details of building the sheets but unfortunately this is what any reader would look for in any financial modeling book. I would never recommend this book for any serious person looking for a detailed book in financial modeling.

I gave the book two stars because I copied the sheets in the CD, built it again from scratch, used some of the formulas to save time in building my model which in fact gave me longer time but helped in a way or another to achieve my objective.

About the Authors

Sofiane Amziane is Professor and head of the Civil Engineering department at POLYTECH Clermont-Ferrand in France. He is also in charge of the research program dealing with bio-based building materials at Blaise Pascal University (Institut Pascal, Clermont Ferrand, France). He is the secretary of the RILEM Technical Committee 236-BBM dealing with bio-based building materials and the author or co-author of over one hundred papers in scientific journals such as Cement and Concrete Research, Composite Structures or Construction Building Materials as well as international conferences.
Laurent Arnaud is a Bridges, Waters and Forestry Engineer (Ing�nieur des Ponts, Eaux et For�ts) and researcher at Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France. He is also Professor at ENTPE (Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat). Trained in the field of mechanical engineering, his research has been directed toward the characterization and development of new materials for civil engineering and construction. He is head of the international committee at RILEM – BBM, as well as the author of more than one hundred publications, and holder of an international invention patent.

About the Author

Larry Neal is Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the author of The Rise of Financial Capitalism (1991) and The Economics of the European Union and the Economies of Europe (OUP, 1998). He was the editor of Explorations in Economic History from 1991 to 1998.

Rondo Cameron was the William Rand Kenan Professor of Economics and History at Emory University. He was the 1991 recipient of the Editor's Award for Exceptional Books for the first edition of A Concise Economic History of the World. He authored or co-authored several books, including The European World (1970) and Civilizations: Western and World (1975), and was the coeditor of International Banking 1870-1914 (OUP, 1991).

Concise, informative and extremely well written

This is one of the best books on economic history that I have read. This book is an excellent start for a person interested in economic history: it is well written, it is well structured, and overall fun to read. This book is an excellent overview and a very good guide. One thing for sure: it's an excellent way to spend your time. It enriched my knowledge of economics and history and became a good companion.

Eurocentric, but focused

Don't expect "A concise economic history of the world" from Cameron's work. Do expect, however, an excellent account of Europe's economic history. If you want a more global, less "economic" account of the pre-modern world, try Janet Abu-Lughod. As for the modern world, a synthesis of Cameron and Asian experts would provide the comprehensive picture Cameron's title implies.

The total economic history of the world in laymans words

Rondo Cameron certainly explains the hold economic history of the world. Rondo takes you from the ages before Christ to the twenthieth century. Why did the Roman Empire went down?, Why Spain was not able to achieve higher levels of economical well-being despite their big colonies overseas?: Questions like these are answered in Rondo's excellent book. If a man wants to forsee the future, he has to go back and learn where he comes from. Economics and History were successfully married in the book, so historians, economists and financiers will find it helpfull.

In the fall of 1912, the Ottoman Empire was in turmoil. In addition to the Albanian and the Yemen rebellions, the Empire was at war with Italy over the Libyan territory. On October 8, 1912, Montenegro declared war on the Ottoman Empire, beginning the first of the Balkan Wars. Embracing maturity and setting their differences aside, four nations joined together to form the Balkan League-Serbia, Greece, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. Despite the tremendous land victory celebrated by the Balkan League, disputes over dividing the won territory soon arose. Dissatisfied with its share of the Macedonia, Bulgaria attacked its former allies Serbia and Greece. On August 10, 1913, the Treaty of Bucharest ended the second conflict, but it did not bring the peace. In the First World War, which was initiated by Sarajevo assassination, Balkan again became theater of the war. The Balkan wars have been a popular topic for scholarly research since their resolution. Despite the attention this topic has received, however, the research is far from complete. In this study contributing to the documentation and understanding of this conflict, author Igor Despot has not only reviews the events of the wars, but also considers these events in light of pertinent cultural aspects, identifying the commonalities and differences that may have determined alliances or sparked conflict throughout Balkan history.
