The novel's narrator, Stevens, is a perfect English butler who tries to give his narrow existence form and meaning through the self-effacing, almost mystical practice of his profession. In a career that spans the second World War, Stevens is oblivious of the real life that goes on around him -- oblivious, for instance, of the fact that his aristocrat employer is a Nazi sympathizer. Still, there are even larger matters at stake in this heartbreaking, pitch-perfect novel -- namely, Stevens' own ability to allow some bit of life-affirming love into his tightly repressed existence.

Greeted with high praise in England, where it seems certain to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Ishiguro's third novel (after An Artist of the Floating World ) is a tour de force-- both a compelling psychological study and a portrait of a vanished social order. Stevens, an elderly butler who has spent 30 years in the service of Lord Darlington, ruminates on the past and inadvertently slackens his rigid grip on his emotions to confront the central issues of his life. Glacially reserved, snobbish and humorless, Stevens has devoted his life to his concept of duty and responsibility, hoping to reach the pinnacle of his profession through totally selfless dedication and a ruthless suppression of sentiment. Having made a virtue of stoic dignity, he is proud of his impassive response to his father's death and his "correct" behavior with the spunky former housekeeper, Miss Kenton. Ishiguro builds Stevens's character with precisely controlled details, creating irony as the butler unwittingly reveals his pathetic self-deception. In the poignant denouement, Stevens belatedly realizes that he has wasted his life in blind service to a foolish man and that he has never discovered "the key to human warmth." While it is not likely to provoke the same shocks of recognition as it did in Britain, this insightful, often humorous and moving novel should significantly enhance Ishiguro's reputation here.

A true tour de force

The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Highly recommended.
It's difficult to believe how much Kazuo Ishiguro packed into this short (by today's standards), highly praised novel -- a lifetime of work and relationships, the realization of inescapable regret, and the hope it is not too late to join the rest of humanity.
Stevens is a butler for an English house that is no longer great, nor is it owned by the family for which it is named. His postwar employer is, instead, an American named Farraday; as a stranger will point out to him later, "An American? Well, they're the only ones can afford it now." Farraday "affords" Darlington Hall by shutting much of the house down and using a reduced staff, which Stevens can understand, as the staff that would be available would not be up to his own high standards. When he receives a sad, lonely letter from Darlington's former housekeeper, Miss Kenton (now Mrs. Benn), and later is told by Farraday that he can borrow his employer's car for a vacation on the road, he weighs the opportunity and decides to take it for "professional reasons" -- to see if he can lure back the highly qualified Miss Kenton to her former position. During the brief journey, he spends much of his time contemplating what "dignity" in his profession means -- and whether he lived up to it. After a plethora of recollections about the late Lord Darlington during the prewar years and after his meeting with Miss Kenton, Stevens comes to two great understandings: he did not serve a great man as he thought he had, and, in doing so, he had missed a chance for love and fulfillment. His devotion to Lord Darlington has betrayed him, personally and professionally. "I can't even say I made my own mistakes," he laments. "Really -- one has to say -- what dignity is there in that?"
This revelation does not come quickly or easily to either Stevens or the reader. Each anecdote that Stevens recalls to illustrate a point he wishes to make to himself -- the definition of dignity, how he upheld dignity by serving his employer while his own father lay dying -- subtly reveals how much he has shut himself down emotionally in order to serve. With each story, it becomes clearer that Lord Darlingon is an easily manipulated man, out of his league in world politics but insistent on playing the role of peacemaker -- even when it is no longer appropriate or wise. When his friendship with a woman leads him to firing two Jewish maids, it foreshadows his attempts to influence the British government into appeasing Hitler and the Nazis at any cost. He goes so far as to say that the U.K. should perhaps follow Germany's lead. "Germany and Italy have set their houses in order by acting . . . See what strong leadership can do if it's allowed to act. None of this universal suffrage nonsense." Stevens unwittingly proves Lord Darlington's point for him -- he trusts Lord Darlington's judgment as blindly as any German trusted Hitler's, believing that "people like him" are too ignorant to make the decisions that must be made and following the great man contentedly -- and thus making a bad decision.
When it comes to Miss Kenton, here too his perception is kept in check by his need for professionalism and dignity. His repeated emphasis on their "professional" relationship and his desire to reconnect with her as a "professional" only highlight the extent to which he will go to suppress his real feelings -- and the very real possibilities that existed.
In life and love, Stevens realises he has been avoiding both. In the end, however, there is hope. After sending Miss Kenton home, back to her husband, Stevens turns to "bantering"; that is, engaging with people without resorting to pre-programmed professional phrases --in short, truly interacting with his fellow humans. "After all, when one thinks about it, it is not such a foolish thing to indulge in -- particularly if it is the case that in bantering lies the key to human warmth." Indeed it does.
One doesn't have to be a butler in service to others to use the remains of his or her own day to look back and appraise where one went wrong and where there is still room for hope. This is an incredible journey toward understanding, written in a concise, spare manner that fits perfectly with the character of Stevens. Few writers have the gift of saying so much in so little space. More should learn it.

First Ishiguro - not disappointed at all

Was my first Ishiguro - and I must say I was impressed. At first, I thought it was another slow paced smoke monster story (not really a monster, a secret) but as the story progressed, I was hooked. Impressive writing, and beautiful dissection of the central character's psyche.

Platform Scale is a Fantastic Theoretical and Pragmatic Guide to Building the Companies of The Future

Personal Background & Summary
While Platform Scale is accessible to anyone interested in technology and how new businesses are being formed, I have always found it helpful to know the reviewers background in online reviews. In this case, I am a growth equity technology investor that is highly familiar with the concepts brought up in Platform Scale. I live and breath technology and my ability to succeed at my job depends on my understanding of technology-based businesses. With that said, this book provided incredible theoretical clarity to a number of concepts I had understood intuitively/pragmatically and has allowed me to more broadly apply these concepts across different business lines that may be in need of disruption. As a collaborator with the author on this project, I've done my best to give my objective perspective on Platform Scale, who should read it, and why it is (most assuredly) a worthwhile investment of your time.

Section 1 - Introduction to Interaction First Businesses
This section is fundamentally about bringing readers up to speed on several common concepts (Aggregation, Means of Distribution, Methods of Interaction, Role of Producers & Consumers, Network Effects, Data as Currency) that businesses operating at platform scale utilize in radically different ways than prior enterprises. Depending on your previous knowledge level and understanding of (primarily) Silicon Valley-based platform businesses (Uber, AirBnB, Facebook), you may already be aware of the mechanisms described at a superficial level, but not at the granularity of how those concepts translate into business processes. The author explores these concepts and how value is created through the idea of Pipes (linear value movement) and Platforms (bi or multi-directional value movement). The most valuable part of Section 1 lies in Chapter 5, where the key drivers of Platform Scale are described, as the author does a great job of relating previously known economic drivers with radically new opportunities based primarily on technological trends. Overall, Section 1 is a great primer as to how and why Platform Scale businesses have, almost magically and with great rapidity, become extremely competitive with previously hard-to-disrupt command and control corporations.

Section 2 - Designing the Interaction First Platform
The second section explores how to best build an interaction-first platform from the ground up, which use cases must be accounted for, where friction might be encountered, and how value will/should be created. At its core, this section describes how platforms should have a central principle of value that is easily understood, and upon which others can create additional drivers of value. While Chapter 1 gets bogged down in complex analogies in what I believe are attempts to simplify highly intricate ideas, read on as Chapter 2 describes perhaps one of the most important ideas of the entire Book, the Core Value Unit and how it powers the massive value creation of new platform businesses. The CVU and the closely connected concepts of Curation and Interaction Flows are also explored in detailed, and add necessary concrete context and examples to how one might go about designing the next Platform Scale business.

Section 3 - Building the Interaction First Platform
The third section is about one concept: execution. How does one build a PS scale business from a management perspective? Chapter 1 is a strong summary of the concepts (Interaction Space, Production Incentives, Long Term Value Creation, Curation Mechanisms, Ownable Interactions) later explored in depth. From a personal perspective, the most interesting discussion revolves around how to lock-in users in what are, by design, "open" platforms that encourage movement amongst users and producers. The corollary to this is how to utilize friction, either naturally present or artificially created, to increase the overall value of the platform. The case studies towards the end of the platform are instructive in illustrating potential avenues of dysfunction, but I question the broader applicability of the specific lessons learned here, as we in the very early stages of understanding how platforms work (this book definitively advancing our overall knowledge set).

Section 4 - Solving the Chicken or the Egg Problem
The fourth section explores the old-as-time problem of creating a two-sided interaction from scratch in the context of the very new platform scale business. Instead of suggesting concrete ways of juicing the marketplace, which I would have discounted as likely too specific to be broadly applicable, the author instead takes the stronger path of prioritizing theoretical approaches to sparking interaction. Of the concepts presented, the most salient is likely the staged value creation approach, which the author presents concisely in a case study of OpenTable.

Section 5 - Virality - Scale in a Networked World
Once you have solved for Section 4, i.e. the positive feedback loop is self-sustaining, how do you increase the rate at which it interacts? Section 5 describes two main strategies, several temporary (Termed "Bumps") and several that are more sustainable (Termed "Engines"). The author's deconstruction in Chapter 4 of virality in comparison to contagious diseases is both humorous and incredibly informative. For those that are familiar with the Lean Startup movement and its startup canvas, the author's Viral Canvas's and corresponding examples were extremely helpful in clarifying the concepts presented.

Section 6 - Reverse Network Effect
In The Who's song, Won't Get Fooled Again, there is a line, "Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss." As the author sums up, I can't help but agree that while the creation of big command and control corporations may be ending, the creation of enormous platform-scale ecosystems is just beginning. Given that is the case, and that many platforms are currently subsidizing their value creation for both users and producers, the author's focus on how to scale value without significant amounts of capital is apropos. Finally, Platform Scale ends with a discussion of some of the problems associated with platform scale business and how to best approach them, which will surely make this required reading amongst management at platform scale businesses when funding for subsidized value creation becomes scarce.

Summary
Overall, Platform Scale is a fantastic exploration of the steps required to build platform scale businesses and ensure they are self-sustaining. More importantly, this book also prepares the reader for the platform scale businesses of the future by discussing the theoretical and abstract components of PS ecosystems. Despite some unnecessarily complex examples in specific sections, the author manages to maintain consistent tone and quality throughout what is an ambitious look at where business is likely headed. While PS is most applicable to business managers, investors, and those interested in technology, I also believe the book is illuminating to those that seek to understand how the world works in general, as the principles discussed herein will power a significant portion of the business world, and society, going forward.

Rich with patterns and models derived from hundreds of examples of consumer platforms

Platform Scale stands out among other works on Platforms so far. Sangeet Choudary has proved that the unique style of presenting complex and tough material as simple, clear concepts can only happen when the author lives and breathes the stuff. The principles of design of platforms and modern businesses come to life with the examples he covers throughout the book. These businesses are consumer businesses that are changing the daily routines of people around the world. Yet, there are not many articles or books that cover them with the comprehensive thought process on how they might be built. Sangeet's book fills the gaps in existing literature and also challenges established works to bring more contemporary and futuristic businesses as examples to the table for discussion. It is tempting to ask Sangeet to satisfy the Software engineers who provide the backbone to most of the digital platforms in his future work. But his mission is clear when he says that he chose to write the book for startups and entrepreneurs dreaming to build platforms of the future. The book does justice not only to his target audience but also to any student of business who is curious to grasp the emerging trends in consumer platforms. I strongly recommend this work as a must read for anyone to get to the core of changes happening in businesses and industries around them, throughout the world.

Outstanding book

This is an outstanding book. SQLJ is a simpler way of embedding SQL statements in a Java programming, and is possibly the successor to PL/SQL.
I liked this book because it covers SQLJ programming, as well as:
1. Oracle SQL.
2. Oracle PL/SQL.
3. Oracle JDeveloper.
4. Developing J2EE components for the Oracle9i Application server (9iAS) such as EJB, servlets and JSP.
5. Java stored procedures.
I liked the author's writing style: it is clear and to the point. I found it very easy to read, and was able to follow the examples in the book and apply them to my own programs.
I highly recommend this great little book!

I loved this book

I've been using SQLJ for some time now, and there's no question SQLJ is going to be THE way to access an Oracle database using Java - SQLJ is a lot easier to use than JDBC.
This book introduces the subject of SQLJ and Oracle in a well organized manner, and also covers the advances features like including SQLJ in Enterprise JavaBeans. This book even covers the new Oracle9i features.
Up to this point, I was frustrated by the lack of decent books on SQLJ. One of the things I really liked about this book is that the programs and database scripts actually work!
If you want to learn SQLJ, this is the ONLY book worth buying.

Java Programming with Oracle SQLJ - above average

My knowledge of Oracle and Java is beginner/intermediate level and I like this book a lot.
The book explains how SQLJ relates to SQL, PL/SQL, Java, JDBC and it provides a good introduction to the JDeveloper IDE (Integrated Development Environment).
The book is written very clearly and the appearance and organization of the text is well up to the O'Reilly standard.
I can't comment on the worked examples yet as I have not yet tried them out.

A very useful book!

This is an excellent book to read if you want to learn about wastewater treatment or just if you want to refresh your knowledge of this theme. The book presents easy to follow examples in many of the topics, say, clarifiers design (primary, intermediate, final), Aeration basins, etc. I prefer this book rather than Viessman & Hammer because it is much more friendly. I have not check yet the part of the book corresponding to water treatment, but the wastewater part is very good.

This book was used at Portland Community College for an Environmental Engineering sequence (2 Quaters).

Even though this book has introductory concepts of Chemistry, Biology, College Algebra and Fluid Mechanics I would highly recommend a term of "Freshman" 100 Level Chemistry, Biology and related topics in Physics.

The authors intend that the instructor (coursework) will follow the chapters in numerical order. If you have an instructor that skips around a lot it makes this book very unfriendly. It also helps greatly if the instructor provides field trips and lab work directly related to the chapter topics.

The authors covers the chapter topics very completely, however it is a very Dry Read. The example problems often leave out unit conversions. The publisher does not provide a student solutions manual, therefore making it very difficult to find errors made on chapter problems. Many of the images and pictures could be a lot better.

The authors do not present the under laying theory well because they expect the reader to be moderately versed in the math and science aspects.

The authors do a good job explaining the physical processes of water and wastewater treatment.

I feel that I gained a lot of knowledge from this book and there are not any other choices that provide the overview of processes and theory all in one book.

This is NOT a book you want to buy new. Buy It Used. If you are studying this topic for yourself buy an Older Edition.
