THE FIRST FULL-LENGTH BIOGRAPHY OF THE POPULAR TV PSYCHOLOGIST

The authors point out in this 2004 book (that admittedly was not written with the approval of Dr. Phil) that after he felt 'betrayed' by a teacher in 5th grade, "McGraw claims that, from this moment on, he never again felt comfortable in any academic setting... By his own admission, he likely wouldn't have made it through high school had it not been for the discipline of participating in sports." (Pg. 18)

They note about the 2002 revelation of his unsuccessful first marriage, "Some listeners had a hard time believing that McGraw even has an ex-wife. Oprah's beloved, tell-it-like-it-is guru had a failed marriage? The man who complains that America's divorce rate 'is just ridiculous'?... Yes, THAT Dr. Phil is the ex-husband of a woman who decided to spill the beans on their marriage." (Pg. 40-41) They add, "The marriage was annulled by a Kansas court in December 1973. Neither saw each other after the split until their 30-year high schoool reunion in Kansas City, the first either one had attended, as far as classmates can recall." (Pg. 49)

Dr. Phil later admitted, "McGraw ultimately concluded that one-on-one counseling just wasn't his calling... 'I'm just not cut out for it,' McGraw explains. 'You know, I did it for a while. I paid my dues. I've been there and sat in the office with the therapist couch and done all that. But I don't have the temperament for it. A lot of people are looking for a baby-sitter. And I'm not very good at baby-sitting." (Pg. 82-83)

After he was "discovered" by Oprah during the infamous "Mad Cow Disease" trial [his jury-consulting firm was hired by her during trial preparation], "Before long, McGraw was getting real on 'Oprah' every Tuesday, becoming her first guest with a permanent recurring appointment. McGraw's brand of therapy was less twelve-step than one-liner. McGraw said, 'You either get it, or you don't,' and Winfrey's audience loved it... And the Winfrey/McGraw good cop/bad cop balance worked perfectly. Winfrey's kindly manner counteracted McGraw's antagonistic and in-your-face opinions." (Pg. 125)

They add, "of all the authors Winfrey has supported over the years, perhaps none has benefited more than Phil McGraw... when Winfrey urged her popular regular Tuesday guest to write a book of his own in 1998---accompanied by a clear intent to endorse it---you could say he was already halfway to the bestseller lists before putting a single word on paper. If there was such a thing as a surefire hit in publishing, this was it." (Pg. 131) A ghostwriter who helped with McGraw's book Relationship Rescue said, "McGraw hit the stage culturally at the perfect time for someone like him... The self-help world was just coming off a long love affair with this inner child movement... They were all touchy-feely, sensitive, gentle types of approaches and the audience for it was getting tired... And here comes McGraw." (Pg. 133)

They point out that audience members of his show are required to sign a release form which includes the statement, "I represent that I do not suffer from a mental illness and am not currently under psychiatric care. I further acknowledge that Dr. Phil McGraw... does not and will not administer individual, group, or medical therapy; and his advice, opinions, or statements should not be considered individual, group, or medical therapy of a substitute or replacement for those therapies." (Pg. 156)

This book is tremendous resource for anyone interested in making the most of their career and improving communication in the workplace. In the past 20 years, I feel that we've been streamlined into narrow fields of specialization, and this has led us to lose sight of the importance of focusing on the "big picture" and connecting with those around us. Beverly Jones taps into this idea just when we need it. She's right on target, and I plan to use the book as a resource in the college-level Business Communication classes that I teach.

Very effective strategies

I purchased this book in early December (2015), and I’ve been trying out the different solutions Bev suggests. They’re all practical, and those I’ve tried I’ve found to be effective. For example, in the chapter on building presence, Bev provides a checklist of key factors affecting how others see us. I recognized in myself the things I did to undermine my presence. So I’ve been following Bev’s suggestions for speaking more directly, without hesitation or self-deprecation/degradation. As a result, I’ve noticed that others pay more attention to what I’m saying and they respond more positively to what I say.

Plenty of other suggestions have been effective too, like ways to better understand what motivates the people around us, “managing the boss,” building self-confidence and the 80/20 rule about prioritization.

It’s a very worthwhile book. I highly recommend it to anyone starting a career or to others like me, who are looking to set a new career path.

Playbook for all

The best coaches are those who can demonstrate the value of positive action. Bev Jones embodies that skill. This brilliant book was a great choice as a Christmas present for myself and for a friend. Others have made great points here about its value. I want to recommend it especially for women. Jones's cogent advice hits home as I think about how many women I've known who have sabotaged their own careers because they have been raised to be quiet, to settle and to apologize without reason.

This book is a tonic. Jones offers a path out of self-sabotage and into success. She unfailingly shows that success of the best kind always occurs with grace and self-awareness. She proves that assertiveness does not need to be confused with aggressiveness.

Again, good playbook for all from an accomplished career coach.

Thorough, Detailed and Scholarly

If you're looking for a very scholarly and detailed treatment of paleoanthropology and paleobiology you need look no further than The Human Career by Richard Klein. This took me awhile to pour through, but it helped me get a much better grasp on a subject I haven't thoroughly studied in several years.

The general outline of the book works forward through time from the background of primates until anatomically modern humans in chapter seven. The last chapter recalls a lot of the preceding material in a synopsis, while the first two chapters go over some introductory items like the nature of evolution, classification schemes, definitions, the geologic time frame, issues of dating, etc.

The book is filled with many illustrations that will give a good picture for the reader of what is often being discussed. Of course there are other illustrations like tables, stratigraphy schemes, cladograms, etc.

Again, this is a very scholarly work. I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction text on human evolution, though it could be one, if the reader is willing to pour through the material slowly and learn many new words. It's not highly technical, but the reader should be familiar with evolutionary terms, stratigraphical terms, radiometric and other dating techniques, anatomical names, etc. Also, a good portion of the latter half of the book is on discussing the tooklits of homo species and their variation and similarities with one another.

I don't have many bad things to say about this book. This is also really an excellent reference book. Pages 750-1000 are filled with nothing but references, showing the amount of work this book took. Though this might take away from a traditional form of footnoting, I have a feeling that footnoting in-text would get very tedious with this type of work. It's very easy to recommend this book if you're wanting to brush up on evolutionary history.

An incredibly thorough outline of human evolutionary history, covering not only hominid taxa but also primate evolution and important foundational topics like dating methods. The language is clear and easy to read.

However Klein does present as established fact some elements of the field that actually remain far from settled, so a keen student would be wise to seek out some additional reading to get a more holistic picture.

Great! This text is thorough and direct. The author doesnt necessarily follow the crowd. He includes the references that Lucy was likely a transitional knucklewalker and that Kabwe 1 is a early modern human (not heidelbergensis, not rhodensensis..)

ON THE LEGAL COMPLEXITIES OF OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

There are many kinds of ships and an almost infinite variety of construction projects. But under what category would you place an offshore construction project – and under what category of law? The answer is rather important if you happen to be a practitioner dealing with such a project and having to draft the construction contract. If so, your first port of call for clear, authoritative and erudite advice on this and related matters would be this book by Stuart Beadnall and Simon Moore.

It would be entirely appropriate to call this a specialist legal textbook, for offshore construction is a specialist area of construction and engineering which could well be the province of the construction lawyer but, actually, it isn’t. The authors Beadnall and Moore explain in the acknowledgements that in the opinion of industry insiders their industry is unique for a number of reasons. An offshore construction, whatever function it serves is not a ship nor, in their words ‘a floating form of offshore building.’

It is (instead) a specialist area of marine construction in its own right,’ they add, but one that survives ‘without the benefit of standard contracts, nor any body of law specifically concerning offshore construction contracts.’

Small wonder that in the opinion of C W Chung -- who served as Executive Vice President of Daewoo Heavy Industries, (a leading provider of offshore oil and gas units) -- and who commissioned this book, ‘a legal textbook focusing entirely on offshore construction contracts is long overdue.’ This then is a pioneering work in this field and as such, an important addition to Lloyd’s Shipping Law Library published by Informa Law from Routledge.

Having defined what an offshore construction project is, the authors describe the book as ‘concerned with contracts for designing, building and installing units or platforms or vessels or facilities, for the exploration, development, production and decommissioning of offshore oil and gas fields.’ Referring to the long list of challenges inherent in building an offshore facility, including technological and commercial challenges, as well as fluctuations in market conditions, the need to innovate and the possibility that things may go wrong, the book is also focused inevitably on disputes.

Logically organised over eighteen chapters, the book covers, one would assume, every conceivable aspect concerning the law and practice of offshore construction, from tendering and negotiating contracts, to design risk, subcontracting and delay, to a host of other issues, including defects, termination, insurance, transport and installation and much more. The final chapter deals with dispute resolution procedures and there is a special chapter on intellectual property rights.

What particularly distinguishes the book is the clarity of explanation and analysis throughout. One tends to wonder why more legal texts aren’t written with a similarly plain-speaking approach. Note also that the authors focus primarily on English law which, as they say, remains the common choice of law for offshore construction contracts.

Easy to use, with a detailed table of contents and numbered paragraphs, the book excels as a work of reference, with extensive footnoting and tables of cases and legislation. There can’t be a shipping practitioner anywhere who wouldn’t benefit from acquiring a copy.

For the price, this little book really is incredible. It's straight to the point and pithy. And the info culled for it isn't theory based--its the stuff the best salesmen like former Lehman Bros. salesmonster Marty Shafiroff are deploying everyday out there in the battlefield we call sales. There are dozens and dozens of useless and dull sales advice books out there--pick this one if you're looking for a sound investment. I hope RJ Shook updates this fine book one day (it is was published in 1990). The info in this book is gold. Having a hard time opening your accounts? Of course you are, skippy, you're still wasting your time reading this instead of ordering this book.

Barry, a neuroscientist at Mount Holyoke College, was born with her eyes crossed and literally couldn't see in all three dimensions. Barry underwent several surgeries as a child, but it wasn't until she was in college that she realized she wasn't seeing in 3-D. The medical profession has believed that the visual center of the brain can't rewire itself after a critical cutoff point in a child's development, but in her 40s, with the help of optometric vision therapy, Barry showed that previously neglected neurons could be nudged back into action. Sue is at pains not only to present her story, in clear and lucid, often poetic, language, but also, as a scientist, to provide understanding and explanation. She is in a unique position to do this, drawing on both her personal experience and her background as a neurobiologist….

Though Sue originally thought her own case unique, she has since found a number of other people with strabismus and related problems who have unexpectedly achieved stereo vision through vision therapy. This is no easy accomplishment. It may require not only optical corrections (proper lenses or prisms, for example), but very intensive training and learning—in effect, learning how to align the eyes and to fuse their images, and unlearning the unconscious habit of suppressing vision which has been occurring perhaps for decades. In this way, vision therapy is directed at the whole person: it requires high motivation and self-awareness, and enormous perseverance, practice and determination, as does psychotherapy, for instance, or learning to play the piano. But it is also highly rewarding, as Sue brings out. And this ability to acquire new perceptual abilities later in life has great implications for anyone interested in neuroscience or rehabilitation, and, of course, for the millions of people who, like Sue, have been strabismic since infancy.

Sue's case, and many others, suggest that if there are even small islands of function in the visual cortex, there may be a fair chance of reactivating and expanding them in later life, even after a lapse of decades, if vision can be made optically possible. Cases like these may offer new hope for those once considered incorrigibly stereo-blind.
