C++ How to Program: Late Objects Version (7th Edition) (How to Program (Deitel)), by Paul Deitel, Harvey Deitel

Late Objects Version: C++ How to Program, 7/e is ideal for Introduction to Programming (CS1) and other more intermediate courses covering programming in C++. Also appropriate as a supplement for upper-level courses where the instructor uses a book as a reference for the C++ language.

This best-selling comprehensive text is aimed at readers with little or no programming experience. It teaches programming by presenting the concepts in the context of full working programs and takes a late objects approach. The authors emphasize achieving program clarity through structured and object-oriented programming, software reuse and component-oriented software construction. The Seventh Edition encourages students to connect computers to the community, using the Internet to solve problems and make a difference in our world. All content has been carefully fine-tuned in response to a team of distinguished academic and industry reviewers.

The Late Objects Version delays coverage of class development until Chapter 9, presenting control statements, functions, arrays and pointers in a non-object-oriented, procedural programming context.

Terrific book
By Vijay Krishna
I have always been a fan of the Deitel series and have read quite a few books - C, C++ and Java How 2 Program as well as H.M. Deitel's book on OPerating Systems. I have little doubts in recommending this book to anyone starting C++.
So much to say about this book, however I'll limit myself to a few points which I found salient:
This book does not keep referring to C, so you won't get bugged down. (In case you want to learn C, try 'C How to Program' by the same authors.)
This book has been written keeping the beginner in mind (beginner = someone new to programming). So, it contains good, solid, perfect, working code you can try out.
Each page is littered with observations on Good Programming Practices and Software Engineering. That helps in refinement of code, so you need not buy another book to find out how to code 'effectively'.
The exercise questions are elaborate and will keep the reader busy for hours on end. But all that's time that's spent usefully.
And this book does not leave out those who already know C++. It's as good as any book for an intermediate level programmer.
An excellent book. Buy this one, it's certain that this will be the last C++ book you'll need.

Mediocre book with no improvements from 8th Edition - Will drain your enthusiasm
By Rae_Jr
This book suffers from all the shortcomings of the 8th edition. I was first planning on doing a detailed review, but came to realize I would be repeating exactly what many readers pointed out in the previous editions. Besides, the authors don't care much to read them. The prudent reader would do well to read the reviews of the 8th edition to have an idea of what to expect at C++ How to Program (8th Edition).

For the sake of completeness, I will point of a few things.

You are looking at the most expensive book on C++ ever written, with nothing magical to show for that $110+ price [edit: with the fall semester underway, the price is now $135+]. We know books marketed as textbooks are targeted towards students who allegedly have deep pockets (from grants, parents' savings, or loans), hence the $100+ price tag. Simply put, it says a lot that the authors take part in this robbery. In comparison, a reference such as The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup costs $54; C++ Primer Plus, by Prata and Stephen is a meager $38, while Effective C++ by Scott Meyers sits at $35. Their content far exceeds the quality and breadth of Deitel (though they are not formatted as textbooks). Furthermore, to make the biggest profits, the Deitel series churns out new editions at $100+ every other year, so that students can't purchase used copies for cheap from their graduating friends (exercises will mismatch). These morally despicable plays on the price of this book itself justify 2 stars off.

The chief issue with this book though is the incoherent wordiness used. At the time of this review, the publisher has chosen not to enable Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" (draw your own conclusions). So I can't point you to live examples (I will update this once they do). C++ is not an easy language to learn, so random wordiness is your enemy.

As an example, imagine being explained the difference between declaring a pointer ptr1 as { const int * ptr1 } vs. using { int * const ptr1 }. Both declarations are valid, and optional, but the difference is critical and a life-saver. But to explain this, the authors do not bother with short and sweet examples. Instead, they roll out paragraphs of frustrating text. If somehow you make it through those explanations, by the time you get to heavy concepts such as 'base class virtual constructors', the STL best practices, etc., this book will have you gouging your eyes out. Now some subjects deserve 1000 pages, but jumping around with lengthy explanations does disservice. Programming explained right is beautiful.

In addition, the layout of the book is atrocious: the authors use pages of code to demonstrate simple concepts, even in the first part of the book. Why not keep examples short and compile-worthy? That way the reader can type them, see what matters, change things around, and see what breaks. Instead of that, the lines of code never finish, and the reader has little incentive to type it all out (which is so important). Even worse, later chapters refer to lengthy examples listings in previous chapters (warning to Kindle readers).

Again, the reviews of the previous editions stand, so check them out. This book is dangerous for beginners because it risks discouraging them. The table of content, coloring, and the first chapter of the book are attractive. But things quickly unravel. I never heard of a professional using this book as a reference, and for the beginner, notice how even the 5-star reviews encourage this being a supplement instead. I would give it 3 stars if the price wasn't a bad joke.

-=-= If you have some options in choosing a book, here are my recommendations below -=-=-=-

If you are a true beginner and have to start at C++, pick up C++ Primer Plus (6th Edition) (Developer's Library). I question the wisdom of using C++ as you very first programming language (see the first comment to this review below), but hey, maybe you don't have a choice: C++ Primer Plus should serve you well then.

If you know a good bit how to program, but need to get up to speed on C++, I recommend Sams Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day (7th Edition). I usually hate the "Teach yourself X in Y hours" trick, but this author nails it. You will be going dilly-dolly until you finish the book, without needing too much motivation. This book needs more coding exercices for beginners though, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first programming book.

If you need a complete reference, I recommend the powerhouse The C++ Programming Language, 4th Edition. The author wrote the C++ language, and knows what he is talking about.

If you know C++, but would like to learn a few cool tricks, Effective C++: 55 Specific Ways to Improve Your Programs and Designs (3rd Edition) does the job quite well.

There might be more out there, but these gets my vote.

Comprehensive guide . Not the cheapest book out there but well worth it
By Lazarus
Unlike many C++ books, this seems to cover pretty much everything - from getting started through to the meat of C++ and also covering the Standard Template Library (STL). It is written in a somewhat didactic style with plenty of full examples, end of section summaries and tests (Q&A) to ensure the principles have hit home. Unlike many other C++ texts, it is clearly aimed at teaching from scratch, rather than 'starting from C'.

The format is great - color is used for section and for syntax highlighting which aids reading and comprehension.

There are a number of 'tips' scattered throughout the text highlighting frequent misunderstandings and programming pitfalls. The title is justified; the book teaches the fundamentals of C++ AND also how to program - hopefully how to write a good, well structured, easily maintainable C++ program.

The appendices are available in pdf only - a shame the entire book isn't also available that way also. I suspect the appendices were not included in the printed book to (understandably) save paper.

The one niggle with this is that it's a sizable tome already and in order to keep it below 'telephone book' size, it is printed on very thin paper (thinner than that in my bible). The thin paper causes the reverse side to be visible and also means that care is required not to tear the pages.

In all, this is an excellent book for both learning and reference. Highly recommended.

Praise for the previous edition of Explaining Psychological Statistics

"I teach a master's level, one-semester statistics course, and it is a challenge to find a textbook that is at the right level. Barry Cohen's book is the best one I have found. . . . I like the fact that the chapters have different sections that allow the professor to decide how much depth of coverage to include in his/her course. . . . This is a strong and improved edition of an already good book."

—Karen Caplovitz Barrett, PhD, Professor, and Assistant Department Head of Human Development and Family Studies, Colorado State University

"The quality is uniformly good. . . . This is not the first statistics text I have read but it is one of the best."

—Michael Dosch, PhD, MS, CRNA, Associate Professor and Chair, Nurse Anesthesia, University of Detroit Mercy

It's good at being good and good at being bad
By David Schweitzer
This textbook is a step up from a typical undergraduate course in "baby statistics" by demanding more understanding of what ideas and methodologies are and demand more rigor from analysis and understanding of conclusions--most first courses are all about "do this and give the answer." This book will absolutely ask you the questions that force you to interpret your answers.

The format of the book is very appropriate for what it does. It starts with some descriptive knowledge and really basic computations, "Section A" for every chapter. Its problems typically ask you to give examples of this or that (give an example when a one-tail test would be appropriate, now an example for two-tests, etc.), do the same rudimentary calculations you did in baby stats (find the mean, calculate the critical value, etc.), not much more. "Section B" will begin exploring the nuances of various ideas--appropriate sample sizes, using the correct test (z-test or t-test as examples), how to interpret your results and how to do so correctly. "Section C" will cover advanced material usually involved with tougher calculations, tougher problems, and a real demand for knowing precisely what definitions and statements mean.

The explanations in this book are also very nice. Cohen clearly understands what ideas are AND he understands how often ideas are misunderstood (the infamous p-value and the rampant abuse in social sciences is brought up), offering caveats and details to better demystify what this or that is saying.

All in all, it's pretty solid for someone who doesn't want a mathematically rigorous definition of this or that term--it's a book FOR the social scientist, someone who needs some tools in the toolbox and needs to understand how the tools work and what results can be expected.

However, if you're left uncertain about some topic, or what the difference between this term and that term are, good luck. You won't get a clear explanation, for Cohen talks to you like a person, not like a student. And I don't think he understands how to treat you like a student, either. A good example is using Bayes's Theorem: you're given a pretty thorough example of people going to jail being innocent or guilty, complete with numbers and calculations. But then translating all of this into terms corresponding to the null hypothesis and alternate hypothesis are just pulling numbers out of thin air with no context ("suppose this variable is 0.9 and that one is 0.6. This is what happens when you multiply them."). That's not a good way to bridge the gap between a specific example and a general explanation.

Also, expect to struggle with establishing the null hypothesis: many problems make it very clear right away what your null hypothesis is. The others absolutely don't, and Cohen doesn't guide you through this process earlier in the text at all, simply defining what a null hypothesis is and moving on from there. So when you're testing antianxiety drugs but all your drugs are fraudulent and you're wondering about Type I and Type II errors, you're going to spend a few moments wondering what your null hypothesis is to begin with.

Worse, many problems use ugly, ambiguous language. "How many people are probably unqualified if half of all people are unqualified?" vs "How many people are probably unqualified if 10% of people TEND TO BE unqualified?"

The two problems are solved the exact same way using the appropriate numbers you're given in the actual problem's context. But there is a very big difference in BEING unqualified vs TENDING TO BE unqualified. The context here is passing a test, and BEING unqualified assumes you've passed the test. TENDING TO BE unqualified sounds like it's independent of whether or not you passed (which means you're using the same equation, but you're solving for a VERY different variable, requiring you to do some algebra). But again, the book is ACTUALLY expecting you to solve them the exact same way.

So why was there a change in language? Why include the ambiguous "tends to be" unnecessarily?

You'll find many, many, many problems do exactly this. He loses a lot of points there, especially when he goes on about how common it is for students ("and professors!" he says) to get confused and make mistakes; he's just not being precise himself.

And unfortunately the problem is so predominant that the book is basically "okay." You'll get what you need, but you'll likely be left scratching your head at a few things.

Great stats text!
By Amanda Kaczmarek
Bought this book for my introductory statistics course in graduate school. The homework problems were very useful, and I appreciated how the author would explain the concepts and theory. The organizational structure of the book was also helpful in that each chapter has a section on concepts/theory, a section on the formulas/computations, and finally a section on how to use SPSS for those skills. Will be keeping this reference for sure!

Not the best option
By Jasmin Yaeger
The concepts are presented one way, and then the author says "Don't do it that way, no one does it that way....do it this way." Just not advisable, but it was required textbook for my graduate stats course. So...not a lot of options.

I bought this book because it was on the "optional" text book list for my Anatomy and Physiology class. Judi Nath was my AP instructor. I think this book helped me more than the required text book for the class. And I like the random little questions throughout it.

From Kirkus Reviews
Blond, blue-eyed Treva (The Trouble with Trolls, 1992) teaches a pair of greedy little trolls how to celebrate Christmas: following them in order to find the gifts and ornaments they've snitched from her house, she helps them decorate their home, shows them how to share, and offers them a gift--a gesture they make in return on Christmas morning. The story is predictable but related with appealing directness; and fans will be enchanted, once again, with the lovingly detailed folk/Scandinavian details in Brett's bright, crisply delineated art, especially in the intriguing borders--where the trolls' charming pet hedgehogs are busy with their own related pursuits. Stunning illustrations; great ending
By Anne B.
This is one of our all time favorite children's books.
The illustrations are truly spectacular. Even grown ups will want to take a lot of time to study the intricacies of these pictures. The clothing depicted is especially interesting and beautiful.
The story is sweet, with a redemption rather than punishment ending. I always prefer when a children's story has a redemption ending. That's a better message to give our children: that everyone can be reformed if given the right opportunities.
You'll just get a really happy, warm feeling from this book.
Christmas Trolls is also suitable for very small children.

Even better than Trouble
By Michelle Y
We own several of Jan Brett's books. The artwork is superb, entertaining, and the delightful borders on the edges of her pages often provide insights into the plot of the story. As much as we love Jan Brett's other books, this book is by far one of our family favorites. It is both magical and meaningful, and has a strong plot line.
In Christmas Trolls, the delightful trolls from "The Trouble With Trolls" learn about Christmas...most importantly, that the spirit of Christmas is giving, not getting. In today's materialistic society which seems to create greedy and whiny children, a powerful message indeed. We read it year round and enjoy it, it is frequently requested by my children, and it's one of the books I never get sick of reading.

Our Jan Brett Favorite
By Jenny L Dilworth
This is our favorite of Jan Brett's books so far. The moral weighs in a little heavily, but the illustrations are so magical tht they carry the story along almost effortlessly. My children and I have spent hours every Christmas looking at the troll's homes and their Christmas trees. The faithful porcupine silently carries a thread of the story in the half secret way makes Jan Brett's books so special.

Schnitzler's Century: The Making of Middle-Class Culture 1815-1914, by Peter Gay

"This is cultural history of the first order, and it is liberal and humane history at its very best."—David Cannadine

An essential work for anyone who wishes to understand the social history of the nineteenth century, Schnitzler's Century is the culmination of Peter Gay's thirty-five years of scholarship on bourgeois culture and society. Using Arthur Schnitzler, the sexually emboldened Viennese playwright, as his master of ceremonies, Gay offers a brilliant reexamination of the hundred-year period that began with the defeat of Napoleon and concluded with the conflagration of 1914. This is a defining work by one of America's greatest historians.

Amazon.com Review
Prolific author Peter Gay describes the rise of the middle class in the 19th century through an unexpected lens: the life of Viennese playwright Arthur Schnitzler. Yet Gay's themes are much larger than the somewhat obscure Schnitzler: "If we may call [my book] a biography at all, it is one of a class," he writes. Schnitzler's Century necessarily focuses on the Victorians--a term often applied only to the British, but here extended to all of Europe and the United States--and Gay seeks to portray them in their complexity and diversity. "There are many people who think they have grasped the Victorian mentality when they have smiled at gushy keepsakes, maudlin poems, shy euphemisms, silences about matters that matter," he writes. In fact, "they lived with their eyes open." Gay has written a history of habits, with close attention paid to sexual ones. It is the sort of provocative book that the stereotypical Victorian would want to see removed from the storefront window--but also would want to peek at when nobody else was looking. --John Miller

From Publishers Weekly
Though distinguished historian Gay declares in the preface that his new work is not "merely a Reader's Digest condensation of the bulky texts that preceded it," readers of his five-volume study, The Bourgeois Experience: Victoria to Freud, will find most of the material decidedly familiar. As in the series' first book, Education of the Senses, he argues here that the Victorian middle classes were much less inhibited about sex than modern stereotypes suggest. As in the last, Pleasure Wars, he finds that bourgeois philistinism has been vastly overstated and that there were plenty of respectable patrons for avant-garde art and music. Indeed, as Gay admits, some of the actual examples here are drawn from his former work. So what's new? Interweaving incidents from the life of Austrian playwright and novelist Arthur Schnitzler, "sometimes briefly as an impetus to broader investigations, sometimes as a participant," Gay begins his main text with Schnitzler's father breaking into the 16-year-old's locked desk to find, and vehemently reproach Arthur for, a diary indiscreetly recording the boy's erotic exploits; he closes with the diary's August 5, 1914, entry about the "dreadful and monstrous news" of WWI's outbreak. In between, the incident with Schnitzler's diary turns up several more times: as a demonstration of conflicted bourgeois notions about privacy, as an illustration of more lenient treatment of children (Dr. Schnitzler lectured his son, but didn't beat him). As is always the case with Gay, the prose is graceful, the insights solid, the specific examples vivid and illuminating. Fellow historians and longtime readers will feel (correctly) that the author really isn't saying anything he hasn't said before; for those who lack the stamina for The Bourgeois Experience, this is an agreeable one-volume summary with some additional nuance. From Library Journal
The author of The Enlightenment: An Interpretation, Freud: A Life for Our Time, and many other works, Gay takes a fresh look at the 19th century and challenges long-held assumptions about the Victorian age. In this sweeping and provocative survey, Gay uses Viennese playwright Arthur Schnitzler as his guide to exploring the erotic and unconventional currents of bourgeois life in Europe and the United States. He weaves together strands of philosophy, psychology, literature, science, religion, and domestic practices, and the narrative frequently spins off into unexpected territory. For example, Gay offers a delightful discourse on Victorian anxiety, its causes, and its cures. The book can be seen as a distillation of and companion to Gay's five-volume series, "The Bourgeois Experience: Victoria to Freud," but it clearly stands alone as a vital contribution to modern history. Recommended for academic libraries.

Draining His Coffers Dry...
By Nowhere Man
"Schnitzler's Century" is an engagingly written guided tour of the mental worlds of the late-nineteenth century European classes. As traced out over five previous volumes by the historian Peter Gay (b. 1923), the book argues that us Moderns have completely misunderstood our Victorian predecessors: they were neither as repressed nor as religious nor, frankly, as dull as their historical reputations have led us to believe. "Schnitzler's Century," despite Gay's claims in his introduction, is essentially a synthesis and considerable condensation of his five-volume work and, while making slight adjustments for then-recent scholarship (the book came out in 2002), tells fundamentally the same story. Gay, who also wrote a masterly biography of Freud, is at his most animated when discussing how much more varied and open were Victorian sexual habits than previously thought - it even creeps into chapters that address such other subjects as violence and anxiety. Other chapters really describe facets of nineteenth-century life that have, by now, been well integrated into common historical understanding: we know a lot more about home life and middle-class patronage of the arts, for example, than was appreciated when Gay started his project on the European bourgeoisie in the 1970s.

So, the book's a bit old hat. To rework his favorite anecdote, his coffers are draining dry - the narrative flows alright but the book lacks a lot of interpretative juice. Even more, in my view, he shortchanges his eponymous subject, the Austrian writer, Arthur Schnitzler. He doesn't particularly delve into Schnitzler's life and, especially, his work in any great detail and, more annoyingly, tries to read an excessive amount of significance into a fairly minor event in his life. Indeed, one gets the uncomfortable feeling - especially from an historian of Gay's stature (with many masterpieces to his credit, one must add) - that the Schnitzler angle was incorporated to make the book marketable (there was a brief Schnitzler vogue at the beginning of the 2000s). As a way of introducing the broad array of middle-class attitudes, Schnitzler's life doesn't always fit his schema particularly well - except, of course, in the matter of sex, sex, sex. So one finishes not convinced that the nineteenth-century was "Schnitzler's Century"; if anything, Schnitzler's writings, I'd argue, pointed toward the twentieth. While the Victorians were certainly much more complicated than their historical reputation, Schnitzler and Freud were charting exciting and frightening new territories in the unconsciousness, not validating the prejudices of the older generations.

The book is certainly worthwhile if you have a passing interest in the European middle-classes at their moment of greatest cultural influence and his anecdotes are often revealing and witty. He does amass a large cast of interesting characters. But it's also the work of a historian with precious little left to prove and the experience of reading "Schnitzler's Century" is a lot like hearing your beloved great uncle regale you with stories of the olden days. It's an enjoyable collection of people and stories - a nice popular history - but you're not likely to remember much of it afterward.

Biography as History, History as Biography
By Doug Anderson
Peter Gay's choice of Arthur Schnitlzer is an interesting one. After all when we think of Victorian literary figures we usually think of the essayists Carlyle, Ruskin, Arnold; poets Tennyson and Browning; and novelist Dickens. "Schnitlzer" is not a name that readily comes to mind to most readers when speaking of the Victorians. He wrote plays and stories and novels which are rarely read today but Gay is not really interested in taking a measure of Schnitzlers literary achievements. What interests Gay about the Viennese author is not his official output but his private output as Schnitlzer kept extensive diaries. For Gay these diaires offer a glimpse into the private life of the Victorian. Gay quotes liberally from Schnitzlers diaries because after all its the unofficial history of the Victorians that Gay is really interested in. We are all familiar with the public record of the time and the cliches about the Victorian mind set but Gay wants to peel back those cliches and have a look at the Victorian with his gaurd down -- he wants to tell us what the middle-class Victorians really thought and how they really behaved. The diary gives Gay access to the private mind and conscience behind the Victorian facade. One of Gay's points is that there is no typical "Victorian" really and that the much disparaged middle-class is really a much more diversified and conflicted group than many historians would lead you to believe. Schnitzler is not exactly a representative Victorian. In many ways he is a figure (roughly contemporary with Freud) who tells us more about the century to come than the one he was born into. Like Freud he is concerned less with the general goings-on within society than he is with the goings-on within his own and his characters minds -- their hidden motivations etc.....
Schnitzler's mind appeals to Gay because Gay himself is a Freudian and his history is an attempt to reveal the hidden motivations(anxieties , fears, aggressions, desires) driving the age. Gay is a consummate historian however and he never lets his Freudian interests lead him into speculative corners -- he supports every point with lively data and convincingly shows us that the Victorians are a largely misunderstood people. We assume they were overly shy about sex but Gay gathers plenty of evidence to counter this assumption. Schnitlzer himself seems to have thought of little else as he moved from one conquest to another. Whether we are to assume that Schnitzler is a typical Victorian or not seems to be beside the point because what Gay wants us to see is that any generalization that we make about the Victorians will quickly be undone by evidence to the contrary. This is not a "biography" of Schnitzler and it is not a typical "history" of the Victorians or middle-class. Rather this is an interdisciplinary work which blends biography and history. Schnitzler's Century uses one discipline to challenge the other and in so doing offers fresh insight into both.
In addition to "sex" two other topics are given extensive consideration: the "gospel" of work, and religion.
A rewarding work.

Victorians Unmasked
By lvkleydorff
The title is misleading: Schnitzler lived from 1861 to 1931; The book covers the period from 1815 to 1914. The author uses the life of Schnitzler as a hook on which to hang his tales of the Victorian bourgeoisie.
Mr. Gay discusses the moral atmosphere during the 19th century and shows us that the bourgeoisie was not as constipated as they are claimed to be. Next he discusses the Victorian family, their religious habits as well as their culture and work. Shaping the century is the fact that it was relatively free of wars and thus gave people a chance to better themselves in peaceful times. But probably the most important factor was the arrival of the industrial age. The railroads not only created riches for some bourgeois, but enabled the speedy transport of goods, just as the telegraph cut down on the transmittal time of news. Especially the second half of the 19th century was a time of upheaval, with people trying to find their place in a rapidly changing environment. This continued long into the 20thh century before it settled down to a more comfortable pace.
Mr. Gay had previously written a five-volume explanation of the bourgeois experience in the 19th century. I must assume that his research for such a massive undertaking served as the basis of the present book. Unfortunately, too many authors recycle their leftover research. That is definitely not the case here. The writing is fresh and of new interest.

Sex Work and Female Self-Empowerment, by Stephanie Hunter Jones

Prior research has tended to mirror popular representations of the female sex worker as a morally flawed individual and a victim of circumstances beyond her control. Sex Work and Female Self-Empowerment presents a fresh perspective on "the world’s oldest profession" by considering the relationship between sex work and female self-empowerment from a variety of disciplinary and practical perspectives and presenting new data derived from the author’s study of six self-employed indoor female sex workers (IFSWs). Informed by the author’s training in clinical psychology and human sexuality studies and her more than fifteen years of involvement in the sex work profession, this book extends beyond social stereotyping and stigmatization and presents a more balanced view of the identities and aspirations of sex workers in contemporary society.
