Delightful, whimsical, thought-provoking, allegorical novel.

Emir is a young prince in a brand-new kingdom with some rather serious problems to solve. In his kingdom nothing grows old and always remains the same. At his father's request Emir (a rather self-important young prince) reluctantly undertakes two journeys into lands far beyond his experience. The first is a voyage to the Land of the Gods to invent the names of all the creatures and plants in this brand-new kingdom. Gaining knowledge and confidence in his own powers, Emir then goes in search of the God of All Life for help with the kingdom's growing population problem. Emir fails to obtain an answer from the God of All life and upon his return makes one up, and by doing so invents the first lie. Aided by Conscience and Inspiration, who show him the true answer he needs to help his people, Emir finally understand that every living thing should have its own season of birth, growth, and returning to the earth. Wonderfully enhanced with pen-and-ink illustrations, Emir's Education In The Proper Use Of Magical Powers is a delightful, whimsical, thought-provoking allegory and a treat for the mind and heart of all who read it.

Great book for children

My grandmother gave me this book for my sixth birthday, and I have been grateful ever since. This is the story of a young prince in the time just after the world has been created. Emir is a rather typical little boy (headstrong, selfish, etc.), but he learns some very valuable life lessons over the course of his journeys. While this is a children's book, it probably wouldn't hurt some adults to read it and take its lessons to heart themselves.

A Child's Introduction to New Age Philosophy

Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers is an enchanting book for children, young adults, and adults. It explores the nature of reality, life, and death with poetic grace and humor. The author creates a lovingly made fantasy world where all things have a purpose even before their creation and all children are sacred even after they've grown up.

The story begins during the early days of Earth. The king of a brand-new kingdom decides to send his son, Emir, out into the world to learn of its wonders and then to pass his newly acquired knowledge on to their people. At first Emir doesn't want to leave behind his pets and his toys, and travel the world in a boat that might be caught in a terrible storm or sink, but Emir's father insists. He says that it is for Emir's benefit that he sends him. In order to become an adult Emir must learn of the strange and unknown peoples, creatures and plants that inhabit their world and find a solution to the kingdom's problem of overcrowding in order to become an adult. Emir leaves home and has one beautifully surreal adventure after another, meeting with ancient mythological gods and goddesses, surviving a nearly fatal storm, encounters with Conscience and Inspiration, taking part in a parade comprised of historical figures who have yet to be born, even leaving his body temporarily, and finally he returns home with an abundance of wisdom and knowledge. He explains the importance of seasons and that everything must have its season, its time on Earth but that time is not eternal. He bestows unto his people a great gift, death, which makes life only that much more precious. Emir transcends life and death, time and space, and shows us humankind's potential for nobility, courage, compassion, and sacrifice.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to the concepts of life and death. Author Jane Roberts tells a tale that both simply and eloquently probes the human heart and exposes our potential for greatness. Emir's education is deeply spiritual and philosophical, but never dogmatically religious. It's an open-minded book for open-minded individuals. The story is enriched by the illustrations of Lynne Cherry, whose artwork perfectly captures the cultural diversity of our world while creating a uniquely and superbly rendered vision of a place and time that never existed. This book will appeal to children ten and older, though they may not appreciate its depth and insight, or have the capacity to accept its final message about the necessity of death. As for adults, the text is both comforting and disquieting. As human beings we could learn much from one such as Emir; that faith and logic aren't always contrary, that vulnerability is a form of strength, that inspiration is divine, and that love is eternal. The book is full of personal revelations that will inspire and provoke. Its message is universal and undeniable: We must face our own mortality and yet take comfort in the knowledge that our existence held some purpose, though that purpose is beyond our human comprehension. Only in death can we observe our reason for living... but only in life, through our love, can we learn not to fear death.

telling no showing

I like protective, possessive and jealous heroes and Dash was. Also there was a HEA which I always prefer. The problem is that the story was more telling than showing. I did not feel any attraction, love or heat between Dash and Vi and few love making scenes were mediocre. At times the story dragged and even though it was a short book it took me longer than usual to finish it.

Pretty predictable and not much of a story. Short and a happy ending. Didn't really get the "big events" in this book. Weren't many of them.

I was sent a copy of Cults: In Too Deep From Jonestown to Scientology to review. Anything that is out of society's norm is fascinating, and there is probably enough information and books on cults out there to fill its own library. But most people don't want read just about one cult unless they have a personal connection to that one. The Lighting Guide on Cults gives you a top down view of the different cults over the century and what they're about. Not only does it cover the cults themselves, but the book goes into what draws people to cults, the type of people they target, the methods people use to recruit and the history of different cults. The book is only 117 pages, but gives you a lot of information in the small media on how some ideologies can go from religion to controlling structures.

For such a little book, it is surprisingly informative! It of course includes all of the most famous cults that we are all familiar with like the Manson family, Heavens Gate, Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple, etc..., but it also includes many I have never heard of! Raelism, The Brethren, and Eckankar are just a few of the cults that it hit on that were unknown to me. Also included are well known belief systems that many may not realize are considered cults, like Scientology which has a huge following! I was very surprised to learn that there are over 2,000 cults in existence today! It touches some on what causes people to join a cult, as well as the fact that most cult leaders seem to have a narcissistic personality. These men, and even some women, have talked thousands of people into believing they are prophets or somehow know secrets of the universe that others don't! As we have seen play out, this often has dire consequences! From cults that are offshoots of established religions, to ones that worship aliens or other grand illusions, this book touches a little on all of them! Definitely an informative read for anyone interested in what could drive someone to lead or follow a cult!

About the Author
Rosy Edwards was born in Greenwich in a decade when A-Ha were still scoring Number Ones. Upon graduating from Durham University, Rosy found her way back to London, to a flat-share with friends and a job as a Junior Executive in a media PR firm. With a relationship coming to an end, Rosie threw herself into London life - she even went to the roller disco at Vauxhall - and got back into running, Pilates and vintage Kate Bush. In 2013 she joined Tinder.

He is sent to stay with his crippled great-uncle in the English countryside while his alcoholic mother is in the hospital. His anger and confused feelings cause him to withdraw into himself and reject all tokens of friendship offered by the kindly housekeeper. He is further troubled by sleepwalking and nightmares. Then two things happen: he discovers a door leading nowhere and other evidence that the house once had another wing; and he begins to have strangely vivid dreams in which he is another boy who once lived on the estate. As the skillfully developed plot unfolds in alternating sections, past and present touch, mingle, and overlap in powerful and moving ways. In a terrific climax, James finds out what happened to the missing section of the house and how his great-uncle and the housekeeper relate to what his dreams have shown of the past. The final revelation, as well as the identity of the housekeeper, is the breakthrough that helps the James of the present begin to rediscover his feelings. In a gentle ending that is realistic and only partially upbeat, readers see the boy deciding to reach out to his great-uncle to try to save him and himself from remaining emotionally dead. Good summary and very helpful

This book is a good summary of genetics but one will need to read another book in conjunction with this one. It is great for quick reference and will suit students well as a study aid, as the authors give a set of key notes at the beginning of each chapter. The authors avoid any discussion of highly advanced topics, but instead emphasize the raw basics. However, they don't leave out some of the more exciting topics, such as population genetics, cloning, gene therapies, and the human genome project. The order of presentation is logical, with the properties of DNA beginning the book, with Mendel's laws explained based on the genetic code. In addition, this reductionist approach to explaining the biology of organisms is one that is most compatible with the requirements of sequence analysis and algorithms in computational biology. As such, this is a good set of notes for mathematicians who are moving into the area of sequence analysis and need a background in genetics.

The book is very usefull if you use it as reference, but it doesn't explain genetics in general in a complete way, and the fact that its pages are black and white is difficult to consider it a text book for a genetics course.. I would recomended to people who study genetics and know their material well to use it as a quick reference..

As the title suggests,this is not meant to be a textbook of genetics.The basic purpose of this book is to put across key points and concepts in a simple,concise fashion for easy understanding. This book is most useful if you already have some exposure to genetics through classes or more traditional texts.
The strength of this book lies in its clear,brief and logical presentation of topics with good cross referencing.It would be especially useful to students before examinations when reading through lengthy texts or notes is not practical
