Review
Praise for the first edition:

`This book is the fruit of a lifetime's reflection on politics. Birch has unfailingly sensible things to say about the main theoretical issues that the discipline of political science has thrown up in recent decades. The book will form an admirably clear and comprehensive introduction to the study of politics.' - Professor Brian Barry, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK

`This is an impressive book ... it is balanced in judgements, is rooted in careful examination of evidence and texts, and yet never loses sight of the largest issues.' - Professor Michael Moran, University of Manchester, UK

Woman of a Thousand Secrets, by Barbara Wood

The Bestselling Author of The Blessing Stone and Daughter of the Sun

She came to them from the sea, and to the sea they returned her. . . . A story of sacrifice and survival in the New World.

Tonina lives an idyllic life on a small island in the Caribbean hundreds of years before Europeans discovered it. But she has always been an outsider among her people. Unlike them, Tonina is tall and lean and light skinned, and her origins remain a mystery. Her adoptive parents had found her floating in a basket in the sea—a sacrifice? A shipwreck? No one knows.

When Tonina turns nineteen, her parents know she must return to the sea so that the gods don't become angry with the village for keeping something that is not theirs. Under the guise of finding a medicinal plant, they send Tonina to the mainland, a terrifying place she can't even imagine. They know, however, that they will never see her again. And here is where her adventure begins. It is a tale of survival and sacrifice, of luck, magic, intrigue, and danger, romance and betrayal, an epic filled with ancient lore, tales of bearded white men who sailed to this shore in giant ships, and discoveries of medicinal miracles in faraway places. But most of all, it's the story of one woman's quest to discover where—and to whom—she really belongs.

This sweeping story of the undiscovered world before the time of Columbus is Barbara Wood at her very best.

From Publishers Weekly
In the latest epic from Wood (Daughter of the Sun), Tonina, a young Mayan-era woman born on tiny Pearl Island (off Cuba), is tall and light skinned, while her people are smaller of stature and dark. When her differences become too much for her fellows to bear, they send her away to the mainland to find her true people. Her quest leads her to the heart of the Mayan empire and to a barbarian ballplayer named Kaan, who desperately wants to be Mayan. When Kaan's wife dies and he goes on a quest to cleanse her soul, he's unwillingly thrown together with Tonina, and the two begin to attract fellow questers as they make their way through Mayapan. Meanwhile, Kaan is being pursued by Mayan prince Balam, who blames Kaan for everything that has gone wrong in his life. As Tonina and Kaan pick up more followers, a new culture begins to emerge. Wood crafts a complex and compelling pre-Columbian world. (Sept.)

From Booklist
Tall and lean and light skinned, Tonina has always been an outsider among the dark, stocky people of Pearl Island. Her parents found her floating on the sea in a basket, and now that she is 21, unmarried, and unlikely to be (considering her differences),they send her on a made-up errand to the mainland, hoping that she will find her people. What she finds is one harrowing adventure after another. Believing that she is seeking a healing red flower, Tonina makes her way to Mayapan, heart of Mayan civilization, and comes under the protection of Kaan, hero of the ball field. She becomes caught up in the intrigue and danger of court life and the object of a twisted vendetta. As Tonina, Kaan, and their strange group of followers make their way to what will one day be Mexico, they find their people and each other. Combining historical places and cultural references with a little magic and a lot of romance, Woodcreates an interesting look at the founding of the Aztec nation. --Elizabeth Dickie

Woman of a Thousand Secrets
By zibilee
Tonina hails from an island where she doesn't belong. Found in a basket plucked from the sea, she is raised by an elderly couple who recognize her many differences and send her on a concocted mission to find a healing flower. The real purpose for this mission is for Tonina to find her true people and homeland. As she travels across the sea and through the jungles of Central America, she encounters a strange speechless boy, a one-eyed dwarf, and a local hero named Kaan. When circumstances beyond their control force Kaan and Tonina to undertake a long arduous journey together, Tonina begins to learn that the question of her origins may be more complex than she has imagined. As the dangerous mission through the wilds continues, her group attracts a myriad of followers and she and her party encounter ancient tribes, abandoned religious ruins, and deadly enemies bent on destruction. Along with a set of breathtaking discoveries, Tonina discovers that one of her number will be an unlikely ally and friend, and this unexpected partnership may shape the course of her life, forever altering her destiny.

The story of Tonina and her journey was an extremely interesting take on early Mayan and Aztec civilizations. From cultural adversities between tribes, to the religious aspects of the region, the book was an all-encompassing look at a part of world that doesn't get much notice. I found the level of detail of all aspects of the society very engrossing. The book had a directness in tone that made the information particularly entertaining, and although most of the people in the book were fictional, the society and some of the characters portrayed were not. I was amazed to learn of the advancement of the Mayan people in regards to everything from time calculation to cosmetic body enhancements. The religious beliefs of the Mayans and Aztecs were very similar to some of the fundamental truths of Western religion. Most of my enchantment with this book came from depth of the cultural detail and the ability of the author to convey this forgotten culture.

This book was dense with characters, but never became confusing or crowded despite their colorful, in-depth portrayals. I particularly enjoyed the saucy character of One-Eye, the dwarf, and Ha'meen, the aging wizened child who oversaw the palace gardens. Although Tonina's character could be too naive and trusting at times, her intelligence and resourcefulness canceled out her other flaws. Throughout the story she was genuine and kind hearted, even when circumstances were against her. Only the character Brave Eagle (the speechless boy) seemed out of place. He, in my opinion, was underutilized in the story, and it was a bit confusing to finally see the worthiness of his character apart from being used as a plot contrivance.

The first section of this book, which deals with Tonina's exodus from the island where she was raised, was the only shaky part of the story. It seemed rushed, and the circumstances of Tonina's alienation from the other island dwellers was never fully explained, except that she was different from them physically. I didn't really understand the hostility of some of the others on the island when they reacted to an ordinary occurrence and made it a source for anger and revenge. It was clear that Tonina needed to leave the island, but the catalyst for that conclusion seemed forced and unnatural. This, in my opinion, was the low spot in the book, and because of it, I found it harder to immerse myself in the story. The later sections were more engaging and believable and I found my interest in the story picked up after the first few chapters.

Despite some minor setbacks with plot and character, this was ultimately an enjoyable book. I found it had an odd, irresistible pull to it, and I read along with fervor to find out what would happen next. There were many twists and turns to the tale that were both unexpected and fascinating, and this made up for the previous missteps. This book was an interesting departure from those that I normally read, and I would recommend it for those who would enjoy a peek into primitive Mayan and Aztec culture.

A Colorful and Awe-inspiring Read
By K. Hobbs
I won't give you a synopsis of the book, but what I will tell you is that not only is my mind opened to the amazing Aztec and Mayan cultures, I was delighted by how easily the story came to me. Even as detailed and voluminous as the book is, I never once was confused or over-whelmed. I found myself unable to put it down, wanting to know what would happen next to Tonina and Kaan. The narrative kept me on the edge of my seat, and I felt very satisfied at the end, which a lot of storytellers struggle with.

I am not a history buff by any means, but I found the historical significance here fascinating and easy to follow. It made me excited to connect the story with real history.

I would definitely recommend this to any book-lover!

Silly
By Tara Chevrestt
Barbara Wood disappoints me for the first time. I was excited about this novel as it takes place among the Tainos and the Mayans in the days before Columbus. Tonina is abandoned on an island as a baby and raised by the natives despite her obvious differences. At 21, they send her off on a "quest" for a special flower, hoping she will find her real tribe. She ends up in Mayapan and meets a ball player and a one eyed midget and this crazy fantasy like adventure starts. It strikes me as the kind of story that you would read to your kids before bed, rather than an adult novel. She even rescues a boy that becomes an eagle. Little too "fantasy land" for my taste. I also noticed a drastic difference in writing style. Normally in Wood's novels, the reader really gets intimate and in depth with her heroines. However, in this one, I failed to get a real feel for Tonina as the story was told in such an offhand, impersonal way.

GUI Design for Test and Measurement
By A Customer
As a long-time LabVIEW programmer, I know how easy it is to create rich, graphical user interfaces with LabVIEW. I also know how frustrating it is to have an end user sit down in front of my LabVIEW masterpiece and not have a clue of what to do. In his easy to read style, Dave explains effective user interface design and how to apply it to test and measurement.
I especially appreciated Ch. 6 "Graphic Design for Engineers 101 - A Crash Course in Layout and Design." The discussion on designing an effective layout and the provided templates are excellent.

You thought LabVIEW itself solved all your GUI problems...
By Joseph Gerhardstein
As a long-time LabVIEW developer, one of the things I like about LabVIEW is how easy it is to whip up a sharp looking GUI. However, along with this easy-of-use comes a responsibility to develop a user-friendly GUI as well. Though the title of this book implies that it only addresses GUI design, there is a significant amount of time spent on software engineering, understanding users, graphic design and coding techniques. This book is a whopper at over 500 pages, and there is no skimping on discussion of any of these topics.

As a developer who is equally at home with computers and people, it is hard to remember that I am in the minority, and the majority of users of my software are likely to be technophobes. The first 5 chapters of this book address user expectations and how, in a deterministic manner, to come up with a GUI that will be friendly to the target users.

Chapter 6, as another reviewer mentioned, is a crash course in graphic design. Over 50 pages of "put this here", "choose these colors", and "use this font". A great reference.

Chapters 7-9 discuss the mechanics of how to make a good GUI. All the regulars are here: VI Server, Custom Menus, Queue and Event-driven architectures, and Property/Attribute Nodes. But there is some neat stuff I have not seen elsewhere, such as how to make pop-up menus, custom toolbar buttons and floating menus/toolbars with minimum hassle and overhead.

Chapter 10 is a guide to everything graphics. It covers different image formats (jpg, bmp, png, etc.), transparency, where to get "free" graphics, as well as a primer on Adobe Photoshop.

The rest of the book (chapters 11 & 12, plus appendix A) are use cases.

In the back of the book is a CD-ROM with most of the examples, plus a ton of great free stuff (e.g., custom buttons) and trial stuff (e.g., Adobe Photoshop).

Complaints: this book is getting a bit long in the tooth. LabVIEW 7 is out with user-defined events, and 8 will be out shortly with a whole new development paradigm. While much of this book remains relevent, some parts are in need of updating (property nodes have been out how long now???).

My other complaint is that this book looks like a pre-publication proof. Nearly every page has a major spelling or grammar error. It is as if no one could make it through the 500+ pages for a final proof before printing. As an example, from page 181: "At this point, it should be stressed that the visual hierarchy is your GUI panels should be governing by more than aesthetic considerations alone." (yes, this is an exact quote)

Very Useful for Creating Professional User Interface.
By Bob the Physicist
The book is well written and the examples are extremely useful. I have been programming in LabVIEW for 10 years and found the book to be very helpful for improving my programming techniques. My latest user interface is significantly improved over my previous efforts.

Clear and practical
By Odile S. Chilton
As a French professor I was impressed with the format of this book: it answers questions that students ask on a regular basis and it gives answers using English as the basis; as such it would be perfect for anyone doing translation work. The chapter on relative pronouns is particularly successful, so are the little notes about the difference between spoken and written French seldom explained in other grammars. Finally the spiral binding makes it very practical to use!

This book needed to be written: it fills a gap.
By Therese DERAEDT
Having taught French in the American system for many years I believe that this book needed to be written because it fills a gap: most language textbooks and grammar books currently on the market are not practical when grammar is concerned. Having as their focus a communicative approach, many books overlook grammar these days. Often teachers don't really know how to answer the questions American students ask about French grammar satisfactorily. This book helps exactly with that: it anticipates students' questions and provides clear and concise explanations. I therefore appreciate this grammar book very much and think it is extremely useful. The book also fills a gap in that it discusses the differences between written and oral French, a concept almost all textbooks overlook. I believe that the book will certainly appeal to teachers of French (of all levels) but not only to them. It will also interest students who want to perfect their French language skills. Highly recommended.

Excellent teaching/learning tool
By H. J. Siskin
As an experienced professor, I am very impressed by this book. It is predicated upon those grammatical points that pose the greatest challenges for students, from their first year of study up until graduate school, although its ideal audience would be students who have a basic mastery of French grammar.

The book addresses those points that are not necessarily rule-bound, but depend on pragmatic and/or stylistic factors. Mastery of these issues results in more nuanced and native-like speech.

This book is not a verb compendium nor a review of grammar rules. It fills in the gaps that traditional textbooks leave. With the additional perspectives gained from this book, students will gain an enhanced understanding of what it means to speak natural-sounding French instead of un franais livresque--bookish French.

This book is written in a style that is accessible and engaging. The voice of a sincere, encouraging teacher comes through clearly.

Katz-Bourns's book is an excellent addition to a serious French student's library. Bonne lecture!

The renowned psychiatrist's most powerful and important book--a brilliant analysis of the crucial role that German doctors played in Nazi genocide.

Nazi doctors did more than conduct bizarre experiments on concentration-camp inmates; they supervised the entire process of medical mass murder, from selecting those who were to be exterminated to disposing of corpses. Lifton (The Broken Connection; The Life of the Self shows that this medically supervised killing was done in the name of "healing," as part of a racist program to cleanse the Aryan body politic. After the German eugenics campaign of the 1920s for forced sterilization of the "unfit,"it was but one step to "euthanasia," which in the Nazi context meant systematic murder of Jews. Building on interviews with former Nazi physicians and their prisoners, Lifton presents a disturbing portrait of careerists who killed to overcome feelings of powerlessness. He includes a chapter on Josef Mengele and one on Eduard Wirths, the "kind," "decent" doctor (as some inmates described him) who set up the Auschwitz death machinery. Lifton also psychoanalyzes the German people, scarred by the devastation of World War I and mystically seeking regeneration. This profound study ranks with the most insightful books on the Holocaust.

From Library Journal
This extraordinary work analyzes the terrible, seemingly contradictory phenomenon of doctors becoming agents of mass murder. With chilling power, it limns the Nazi transmutation of values that allowed medical killing to be seen as a therapeutic healing of the body politic. Based on arresting historical scholarship and personal interviews with Nazi and prisoner doctors, the book traces the inexorable logic leading from early Nazi sterilization and euthanasia of its own citizens to mass extermination of European Jews and other "racial undesirables." Ultimately the book asks how doctors rationalized being "killer-healers." Lifton's responsea multifaceted evaluation of genocide, of the seductive power of Nazi ideology, and of the psychological process of "doubling"is both profound and thought-provoking. A remarkable achievement; it is essential reading. Benny Kraut, Judaic Studies Dept., Univ. of Cincinnati

INSIGHTFUL
By WRR
The first third of the book is the most interesting and gives a detailed account of how the Nazi Party took control of the medical profession as it existed at the time in Germany. What amazed me is that the administrative and bureaucratic PROCESSES used by the Nazi's in the 1930's are highly similar to how the U.S. Government influences the medical professions in America today. (No, I'm not saying that our government is evil like the Nazi's, just that it's interesting to see how governments, any governments, exercise power over the professions within their domains.) The last two thirds of the book are interesting accounts of individuals who actually implemented the Nazi-inspired perversions of practice.

Technical Expertise
By R. Pace
Lifton's writings are concise, exhaustive and very technical. I would not recommend this book to the "new" reader or researcher in Holocaust history. Lifton's material is not of the type of reading that is a "fast read" due to the technicality and psychological interpretations. However, as Lifton is Jewish, there were several points as portrayed mainly in the footnotes where the author is giving his own particular interpretations of psychological theories as to the mental state of the physicians. I found these footnotes to be more subjective in nature than objective. That aside, I highly recommend this book to any person that is a student of not only Auschwitz and the literal horrors of this particular death camp, but to the person that is fascinated by the psychological makeup of these Nazi personnel, i.e., what caused them to employ these acts against their fellow human beings. Very horrific, unbelievable in nature. I had to read several paragraphs over and over in order to fully grasp what was being said, and then I was only able to shake my head in disbelief. Lifton does a masterful job in his research and conveying what he learned on paper. Exhaustively written, scientific in nature, psychological yet has a "fiction" feel. Lifton's work is masterful!

Must read for those concerned with bioethics!
By K. L Sadler
When I read The Origins of Nazi Genocide, which came out in 1995, the author referred to this original book concerning the physicians and scientists who had exploited the 'situation' in Germany to their own ends. I had also come across references to this book in many, many professional papers...yet, made the stupid decision that I didn't need to read it. I finally decided I had to read this when my advisor in science education recommended it because he was using it in teaching bioethics to science teachers.
Though Friedlander's book is excellent, and was my introduction to The Medical Holocaust (especially as concerned the disabled) Lifton's book goes much further and deals with the physician/scientists within the concentration camps as well as in the psychiatric institutions which became involved in the killing machinery of the Nazis. Lifton's book explores the rationalizations made by these men to take advantage of a situation to experiment on those who could not give informed consent. Though Lifton tends to make a few speculations concerning motives from his interviews with physicians who were not prosecuted or were absolved of their involvement in these camps...his speculations are on target (mostly) and he backs up his statements with the words of these doctors from letters and interviews with those people who had the most to do with them: the prisoner physicians forced to work in these environments not only to save their own lives, but the lives of so many others.
Of course, more information is in this book concerning the atrocities. Sometimes, I had to put the book down and leave it for a while because the information is so horrendous. It is so beyond belief that so many physicians could rationalize the experimentation, using a statement I've grown to recognize in legal documents and even in newspapers in the U.S. ('for the good of society'). I just cringe now when I see this or sentences like this. Science should never replace the rights of the individuals. And scientists are never objective...they have the same prejudices and biases that society has and it permeates their work...to the point of biasing the information they find.
My only complaint about Lifton's book is occasional repetition or dwelling on certain topics/agendas. Sometimes, it seemed as if I had just reread the same pages, but Lifton was trying to make a point in most of these cases, or make a case for what he was saying...
The need to teach ethics in all fields of endeavors, including medicine and research science is all the more important today. If we don't, the work of Lifton and FRiedlander to remind the world of the horrors of The MEdical Holocaust will have been in vain. The slippery slope is growing with advanced technology, genomics, cloning, and stem cell use, without the accompanying legal protections. The Nuremberg Code, etched into the history of mankind in 1947, seems to have been forgotten.
To remind your students of the need for morals and ethics within all fields, this book is a necessary addition for required reading. I will certainly make it required for those I work with....

Maimonides (Jewish Encounters Series), by Sherwin B. Nuland

Part of the Jewish Encounter series

Moses Maimonides was a Renaissance man before there was a Renaissance: a great physician who served a sultan, a dazzling Torah scholar, a community leader, a daring philosopher whose greatest work—The Guide for the Perplexed—attempted to reconcile scientific knowledge with faith in God. He was a Jew living in a Muslim world, a rationalist living in a time of superstition. Eight hundred years after his death, his notions about God, faith, the afterlife, and the Messiah still stir debate; his life as a physician still inspires; and the enigmas of his character still fascinate.

Sherwin B. Nuland—best-selling author of How We Die—focuses his surgeon’s eye and writer’s pen on this greatest of rabbis, most intriguing of Jewish philosophers, and most honored of Jewish doctors. He gives us a portrait of Maimonides that makes his life, his times, and his thought accessible to the general reader as they have never been before.

From Publishers Weekly
Maimonides, one of the preeminent personalities of medieval Jewish history, was a jurist, philosopher, expert in Jewish law, physician at the court of Saladin and a respected and dedicated communal leader. Given all that, it's difficult to understand the decision to present Maimonides's legacy primarily through the lens of his work as a physician. The 12th century was a time of stagnation in the history of medicine, and the author himself concedes that Maimonides contributed very little that was new or innovative to the field. By contrast, his jurisprudential magnum opus, the Mishne Torah, constituted a groundbreaking work in its own day and continues to be authoritative almost a millennium later. Although Nuland acknowledges this in a chapter on Maimonides's religious scholarship, it is dwarfed by the overarching concern with medicine—which seems the primary interest of Nuland, a clinical professor of surgery at Yale. The author does a serviceable job of stitching together this slight, popular biography of the larger-than-life Maimonides, but his writing is marred by an overwrought prologue and some glib generalizations. From Booklist
Reputedly the greatest figure in Judaism after his namesake, Moses Maimonides (1138 [not, as long supposed, 1135]-1204) was also a great physician. That second identity (he has a third as a philosopher, though no one now comprehends his Guide for the Perplexed, and a fourth as a judge) furnishes the surgeon--author of the National Book Award-winning How We Die (1994) entree into the life of this medieval intellectual titan. Like disproportionately many Jewish sons, Maimonides became a doctor in obedience, Nuland thinks, to the Lord's injunction to his people to choose life. In chapters centered on Maimonides' travels, three great books, and medical papers, Nuland argues that that obedience shows in more than Maimonides' medical career. Maimonides was devoted to sustaining the Jews as a people, and out of that, to human life generally. If he was otherwise a physician of his time, bound by the authority of Hippocrates and Galen, he believed that reason and observation should also inform prescription. A little gem of intellectual biography. Ray Olson

Review
"Will educate and inspire not only people of faith, but all who seek to lead a life of significance and meaning."
--Dr. Jerome Groopman, author of The Anatomy of Hope

"Nuland writes sympathetically, one Jewish doctor considering this most extraordinary of Jewish doctors . . . His book is a guide for those perplexed by Maimonides, as well as those ignorant of him. [It is] a deeply satisfying and humane introduction to the greatest of Jewish thinkers."
--The New York Times Book Review

Well written, easily read, useful summary of Maimonides.life
By pengeek
Five stars because fairly short, readable, and informative about a Giant figure of early medicine who contributed much to the ethics and personal commitment to healing his community's spiritual and physical malaise in an inspiring way. I knew little of him but his name until reading this book.

Intriguing and informative
By Trudie Barreras
All of Dr. Nuland's books are well worth reading. "Maimonides" is different from all of the other books I've read by him, in that it was narrative, and did not deal with a modern topic. However, it was extremely intriguing and informative. It gave a fascinating insight into both the cultural circumstances of that historical period, as well as into the personality and genius of a unique person. I believe that the author's special gift is to take complex and confusing information and synthesize it into a form which is not only meaningful but fun to read. I am reading Nuland's books more for inspiration and enjoyment than for anything else, and I have been extremely blessed by all of them.

Dr. Maimonides
By Jerome A. Hoffman
Dr. Nuland "biography" of Maimonides focusses mostly on the sage as a physician, with much of the rest of his life sketchy at best. In fact, the first chapter virtually ignores the subject and instead describes the author's views on why so many Jews became physicians over the centuries. That being said, Dr. Nuland's book is well written, gives historical insights into medicine in the 12th century period, and is easy to read. I have not read any of the other biographies of Maimonides, several of which are cited by Dr. Nuland, and therefore cannot judge whether the paucity of details of Maimonides life presented other than medical is a intentional or the result of the actual absence of data.
