Practical process-turns vision into reality

Biehl does a masterful job of articlating his process for creating a master plan. We may know where we want to go, or what we would like to accomplish, but have trouble putting together a clear plan that we can communicate with others. It's a quick read, and you'll find yourself crafting your plan as you're reading the book. Great templates for weekly team reports, annual reviews, position focus sheets, and a master planning arrow. If you lead an organization, specifically a ministry related one, you NEED this book.

Must Buy!

Our company bought this book two weeks ago as a guide to develop our "Masterplan". This book lives up to its claim that it can work for any size organization. It gives information on defining roles in organizations, how to define and refine your purpose and masterplan and how to follow through. This book will not only help in our company's ministry on a large scale, but it's already helping me in my division within the company and in my own personal life. This book has more good information than I can mention! I'm buying a copy for myself.

Masterplanning: A Complete Guide for Building a Strategic Plan for Your Business, Church, or Organization

I have used this book and its methods for years. I am now teaching it to others. I bought several copies for others enrolled in my seminar...so they wouldn't have to search for it themselves. Master Planning, and its ARROW methodology, is a fairly simple method of getting the big picture of where an organization stands at any given point of evaluation. Other resources are explained throughout the book to keep an organization on track.

The first time I came into contact with the book, I was obligated by my organization to read part of it. We would be using it as an organization and would be sitting through some strategic planning using this very method. I was not enthused at all, to say the least. However, after going through the material in the book and then in the seminar, I became, in our organization, its greatest fan.

I highly recommend it.

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country A great novelization!

From her first Star Trek novelization, "Star Trek V The Final Frontier," J.M. Dillard has been the "go to" author for Pocket Books when it comes to the novelizations for the movies and the novelization of Star Trek Deep Space Nines pilot episode, "Emissary." This is deservedly so, her work in the novelizations of such important events in the Star Trek genre have been exceptional, and this novel is no exception to that rule.
"Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country" as a film was an extremely well told story written by Leonard Nimoy, Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, with the screenplay being written by Nicholas Meyer and Denny Martin Flinn. J.M. Dillard's work in this extraordinary novel not only serves to novelize that original story, it enhances it beyond measure. She does a beautiful job of adding the characters personal thoughts of the events surrounding them and of adding to the story with "between the scenes" sequences that makes this one of her best efforts.
The premise:
The Klingons, having been long time rivals of the Federation whether through open war or unbridled skirmishes have suffered a great catastrophe when Praxis, A Klingon moon suddenly explodes, removing a key energy resource center for the Klingon Empire. Suddenly finding themselves facing too many problems, more or less of their own creation, in which they've spent too much on their military budget and not enough on environmental and other concerns, the Klingon Chancellor, Gorkon must make a decision to sue for peace between the Empire and the Federation.
The main catalyst for that peace turns out to be Captain Spock, who has been working in secret negotiations with Chancellor Gorkon and is now ready to begin those talks in earnest. Spock has managed to secure the use of the Enterprise and Captain Kirk in order to rendezvous with Chancellor Gorkon and escort his ship back to Earth to begin those negotiations.
Here is where the writing of the screenplay and J.M. Dillard's writing kicks into the high gear of intrigue when a conspiracy uncovers itself long enough to fire several torpedoes from the Enterprise and hit Chancellor Gorkon's ship, knocking out their gravity and then two conspirators beam over and murder Chancellor Gorkon and several other Klingons. Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy both beam over, hoping to be able to help Chancellor Gorkon, but he dies and they're charged with his murder.
What follows from there is nothing less than one of the best stories written in the Star Trek genre and filmed, to date. From political intrigue and an extraordinary space battle to some very humorous moments, "Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country" hits on all points.
I highly recommend this novelization as it is an excellent addition to your Star Trek library whether you're into the novelizations or not. {ssintrepid}

I am not a TOS reader, but I found this book really exciting! It is by far the best Star Trek book I've ever read. The pace was ideal. There weren't unnecessary details. Everything was straight to the point. I really recommend this book.

A Joy Ride Through the Universe.

Stuart Kauffman, one of our greatest scientists, is a passionate humanist. "Humanity in a Creative Universe" expands on and elaborates his long-held view of the universe as a wonderfullly unpredictable system that creates novelty and complexity at a furious pace. Kauffman's universe is not a lot of empty space with a little bit of stuff scattered through it, as some physicists argue it is. Nor are human beings insignificant fragments of that stuff, but exceptional and fascinating products of the its creativity. For Kauffman this is a joyous realization, and he makes no effort to conceal his delight in this view of life and the world.

Kauffman knows that we are all aware of our thinking, feeling and choosing selves, despite what the physicists may say. He wants to eliminate the gap between what we know and feel intuitively and the scientific dogmas that tell us everything that happens was already determined when the Big Bang was so mysteriously initiated, driven by just a few simple physical laws. Kauffman explains that the laws of physics alone cannot account for the biological universe, just as the laws of biology cannot account for what we think and feel. The laws must evolve along with the phenomena they govern. Each individual E. coli of the millions in the physicist's gut is more complex, more interconnected, more interactive and more energy efficient than the entire non-biotic universe.

A good place to begin in understanding Kauffman's thinking, is with the concept of "the adjacent possible". In earlier books, describing the evolutionary process, Kauffman has referred to the set of all the possible evolutionary outcomes from a single mutation in any one of the thousands of genes an organism possesses, as "the adjacent possible" into which the organism can evolve. Natural selection winnows these possibilities to a very few that can be actualized in a viable organism. But the number of the adjacent possibilities is so vast, and the circumstances that might favor one over the others so complex. that the outcome of the evolutionary process cannot be known in advance. He illustrates this idea with the homely example of a screwdriver. He asks the reader to specify all the possible uses for a screwdriver. It can't be done. Someone will always be able to come up with a new one.

In "Humanity", Kauffman draws out the implications of the idea of the adjacent possible, beginning with its undermining of the scientific dogmas of reductionism and determinism. This project leads Kauffman and "Humanity" in many directions, which I can't begin to describe here, although quantum mechanics and consciousness, and the possible links between them appear prominently. Some of his explorations lead to conclusions that seem both brilliant and obvious, all are imaginative and fascinating, a few perhaps too far a stretch to be completely convincing. Each reader will have his own assessment of this mix. But the process of sorting out Kauffman's ideas for oneself is an exciting adventure I can recommend to everyone.

Kauffman's writing is not always easy to follow. "Humanity" is not written in a linear style, like a textbook. Kauffman keeps returning to old material in new contexts, making new connections, seeing more deeply into the issues. Sometimes it seems as if a whirlwind has just passed through. But you don't have to worry. There's no examination. "Humanity in a Creative Universe", as enlightening as it may be, is a pleasure trip.

This book is the most interesting and profound exploration I know of the intellectual revolution underway in a host of disciplines though still resisted by much of the academic establishment. Briefly, it acknowledges emergence. An important treatise on creativity as a universal constant

Stuart Kauffman's Humanity in a Creative Universe is the culmination of his exploration of our creative universe. Like his other books, Kauffman weaves complex discussions of quantum theory with observation and opinions on everyday life. He argues with evidence and passion that the progress humanity has reached it's limit in how much can be achieved through reductionist approaches. Kauffman argues persuasively that quantum mechanics shapes existence whether it be the infinite combination of chemicals, ideas or tools we can produce.

Much of what we now know to be empirically validated about our own quantum existence was anticipated and articulated by the author over the past 40 years. "Humanity in a Creative Universe" argues that an enternal creative impulse -- the adjacent possible -- informs the emergence of the universe and human endeavor. While a recent reviewer criticized Kauffman for discussing global warming, banking failures, etc, the fact is the limits and dangers of today have been repeated throughout history.

Further, Kauffman's point is that such challenges can be addressed, but not by relying on reductionism. In doing so, we may continue to make progress but fail to comprehend that in doing so we remain blissfully ignorant, convinced that we have obtained great insights when in fact we are (to paraphrase and borrow an observation Churchill made about Neville Chamberlain) we are looking at the world through the wrong end of a municipal drainpipe ."

Ultimately Kauffman expresses the concern about the impact excessive reductionism will have on humanity's creative capacity that Joshua Lederberg had about it's negative effect on medical progress. Lederberg noted, "My fear is that in the great excitement of this new wave of knowledge, we may lose some of the convergence, the feel for the organism, the natural historical context, the excitement and provocations that come from clinical observation which in my view will be necessary not only to further clinically important needs but even to give us the most important revolutionary findings within biology itself."

Kauffman's book demonstrates that the loss of such a convergence -- as well as the profound feeling of discovery it engenders -- is essential to our spiritual and material well-being. Reductionism seduces us into believing we have complete knowledge. Kauffman demonstrates empirically that the uncertain is the possible, that we are always at the intersection between the known and the imagined. The future of humanity consists of discovering always something commensurate to our capacity for wonder.

The 2nd Chapter introduces a new author (Life Master Ian Harris) and a new approach to how openings can be learned. It presents Dr. Kopec's idea that openings can be learned from the perspective of the following five goals: 1) Development 2) Center Control 3) King Safety 4) Space and 5) Material Balance. Dr. Kopec has been espousing this idea for a number of years in his lectures and chess camps. If effective, it is a novel way of teaching a subject that entails volumes and volumes of books over a number of centuries! About the Author
Daniel Kopec (1954-2016) was an American chess International Master, author, and computer science professor at Brooklyn College. He graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1975. Kopec later received a PhD in Machine Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. With Ivan Bratko he was the creator of the Bratko-Kopec Test, which was one of the de facto standard testing systems for chess playing computer programs in the 1980s. Kopec was one of the most talented home-bred players in the US. Dr. Kopec was New York High School Champion at 14, National Master at 17, Scottish Champion in 1980, 2nd-equal in the Canadian Closed in 1984, and International Master in 1985. He was an active player, journalist, writer, chess educator and scholar. His competitive results with top-flight chess professionals were remarkable. He delivered many chess courses, lectures, published seven highly recognized chess books, and developed eight highly regarded instructional videos (18.5 hours). Over the past 16 years Kopec’s Chess Camp, had become world renowned. In parallel with his chess career, Dr. Kopec had pursued an academic career in computer science with research in artificial intelligence, software methodology, and computer science education. For more than 20 years Kopec tested and evaluated hundreds of human and machine chess players in the UK, Canada, and US in order to quantify their overall chess strength, their specific deficiencies and definite abilities. In bridging his chess and academic interests, Kopec developed a reputation as perhaps the world’s greatest exponent of chess knowledge.

An Outstanding Chess Course!

MASTERING CHESS, by IM Danny Kopec et al., is indeed in its second edition, but it is also in the fourth printing thereof. As of this writing, I actually possess both the latest rendition and the earlier second printing. I am delighted to report that some of issues identified with the earlier release/releases have indeed been addressed, beginning with the “dot matrix font” to which “Voltron” alluded in his earlier review below. Moreover, the book has also been expanded somewhat to 288 pages.

Of course, a single volume cannot possibly teach everything one needs to know about chess, yet Kopec and his colleagues do an admirable job presenting so much vital material – tactics, strategy, and even specific theoretical principles for openings and endgames. The material is presented clearly, with precise explanatory comments and excellent illustrations from either contrived positions or specific games. Moreover, the authors provide a set of exercises at the end of each chapter, including four new tests added for the second edition. The problems cover a vast range in difficulty, from tactics I could solve at a glance to various positions that perhaps even grandmasters may not have understood as well as they should have. [Having flubbed one set miserably, I shall obviously need to study to those chapters more carefully!]

While I find the entire work most valuable, I must call specific attention to Lessons 17-21 of Chapter 4, which address the problem of “How To Formulate A Plan.” So many club players reach tolerably good positions but suddenly come to the realization they don’t have any idea how to proceed. I heartily recommend this section to those who have ever stared at the board and felt utterly “clueless”!

All told, I am completely satisfied with this latest printing of the second edition. Problems with the print or font have been addressed, and the material is absolutely excellent. IM Kopec is perhaps too modest in his “Introduction,” in which he suggests the work is “geared toward the club player (1450-1750). I would extend that rating strength through Class A (1999 USCF rating). I truly wish I had had such a text 50-odd years ago!

Good for begginers or someone new to the game.

This reminds me of the book idiots guide to chess, but in a lecture format that covers a bit more topics. This book is probably best suited for Chess coaches who teach at yhe scholastic level and want a guide. .or a self learner who is learning about chess for the first time, It will cover all essential knowldge begginers should know, like basic tactics, combinations, pawn structures, development. The chapter has excercises at the end and also has move by move discussion of a game. My only real issue with the book is the font. The book I have is 2013 version but it uses a dot matrix font which makes its harders on the eyes, so i deducted a star for quality of the print. Overall nice book for begginers, and chess instructors looking for a guide. Stronger players may not like this book. I have attached a picture of the font used in the book.

Seventeenth-century Tokyo is the setting for Rowland's debut novel, a murder mystery starring the Senior Police Commander in the district of Edo. Sano is an unlikely, headstrong hero whose talk and stumbling actions endanger others. His repeated weighing of the samurai code of loyalty and duty versus the pursuit of justice slows the plot occasionally, but not seriously. The descriptions of the lives of townspeople, samurai, the privileged class, and inhabitants of the "pleasure district" in 17th-century Edo (Tokyo) are brutal, but rich and sensual, especially the Tea Ceremony and New Year celebrations. As a newly appointed yoriki (senior police commander), Sano Ichiro is expected to obey his superior's order to treat the deaths of an upper-class woman and a commoner as a shinju (ritual double suicide). Sano believes the two were murdered and doggedly continues to investigate, risking his job and his life. He gradually uncovers a plot against the shogun himself. The best part of this first novel is the splendid evocation of late 17th-century Edo. The descriptions of the stratified society, the details of everyday life, and the sights and sounds of the city that will later become Tokyo are vivid and compelling. Readers intrigued with unusual settings for their mysteries will enjoy this work. Others may not be able to ignore the paper-thin characterizations and the coincidence-strewn plot. The last paragraph leaves an opening for a sequel. Only large pop fiction collections need consider.

A Great Historical Detective Story

This book was recommended to me by a friend, and now I am hooked! 'Shinju' is a mystery about a supposed ritual double lovers' suicide (the title is the term that is used to refer to that act) that is in actuality a murder. Ichiro Sano, a young man recently appointed 'yoriki'(policeman) is assigned to a cursory investigation of what most of his colleagues and superiors view as a dishonorable and distasteful incident. Sano's takes his duties seriously, however, and almost loses his life -- and more importantly -- his honor in uncovering both a disturbing crime and a treasonous plot. Set against the backdrop of the Tokugawa Shogunate, this novel is educational as well as entertaining, and I really didn't know where the plot would take me as I read; the hero gets in some pretty dangerous situations. Rowland really paints a realistic picture of Japan in the 17th Century, with its dependence on personal obligation and honor. It's both frustrating and eye-opening for the reader to discover that although the hero knows 'whodunnit', his society prohibits him from bringing the guilty party (or in this case 'parties') to justice.

Fascinating history, mediocre writing & puzzle

Rowland is great at making 17th century Japan seem real, and goes into exquisite detail about the material (and, more crassly, moral) circumstances in which her characters live. That alone made the book worth reading, and made me interested in reading Bundori as a follow-up. However, Shinju has serious drawbacks. Anyone who reads mysteries regularly will have no trouble solving Shinju by halfway through the book. The main problem, though, is Rowland's ponderous writing. Her action scenes and urban descriptions are great; but anything about characters' thoughts and motivations gets wordy and dull very fast. Instead of letting readers figure out why characters respond as they do (except for the highly-scrutable inscrutable suspects) she beats to death the possibilities with lists of questions the characters are supposed to have flashing through their minds. In addition, no one moves a muscle in this story without Rowland reporting on its flexion. It's as if she do! ! esn't trust the readers to be as smart as she is. That's annoying. Shinju is a lovely historical tapestry, and compelling as a result. Frankly, I think Rowland should drop the mystery element (which is profoundly unsatisfying) and just write novels of 17th Century Japan. They would probably be great.

Interesting Setting, Less Compelling Mystery

A highly detailed series debut set in Tokyo (Edo) circa 1690. The detective is a newly appointed samurai police officer who quickly manages to piss off his boss and underlings by sticking his naively inquisitive nose into various matters, most notably, a ritual lovers' suicide he is ordered not to investigate. Of course our hero has an inner conflict which rages between duty and justice which battles most of the book, as he gets himself deeper and deeper in hot water. The mystery itself is nothing special, and relies on a villain who is more than slightly crazed. The fun in the book is in all the little details about urban Japanese life and customs of the era, as well as the political background. This is presented very fluidly and is well-woven into the plot.

A present day girl goes to an old world

This is a modern day novel about a twelve-year old orphan who lives unhappily in Canada, the north shore of Lake Ontario. Rose has gone to live with her father's sister and her family. Rose has always felt like an outsider and since she has a new home she might as well explore it. By accident, Rose stumbled upon an old Root cellar in which thought she would find canned vegetables. She went inside the cellar to investigate and when she came out, she came out in the 19th century Civil War era. Rose found herself in another place and another time (the 1860's), and she had shifted through time. Through time travel Rose found friends Susan and William Morrisay. Rose immediately found solace in her escapades through time, she also found that her friends desperately needed her help. The main character Rose, and her new friend Susan are the same age when they meet and as time goes on they embark on a torturous adventure to save Will from certain death. "Rose has finally found a place where she fits in, but she has to travel through time to get there."

The Root Cellar

The Root Cellar begins with Rose. She is 12 years old and orphaned due to her grandmother's passing. Rose has no other family that can take her. She must go live in Canada with an aunt who she has never met. Rose feels very lonely in her aunt's chaotic household. While looking for a quiet place , Rose finds a root cellar. When Rose comes out of it, she is on the same farm during the 1800's. Rose meets Will and Susan while she is there and quickly befriends them. Will goes off to fight in the Civil War. Rose and Susan go to Washington to try to find Will because they have not heard from him.

Janet Lunn did a good job tying the history and fiction together. She keeps the reader interested in the history, and she also makes you want to know what is going to happen to the characters. Janet Lunn also touches on the aspect of losing people and forming new relationships. This book is good and interesting.

The BEST book ever!!

If you like adventure then you will love this book "The Root Cellar" by Janet Lunn.This book is about a girl named Rose who goes to relative to relative . If you are wondering why, it is because her parents died when she was a young girl. and she went to live with her grandma. Her grandma died and then Rose started to go from place to place because the relative died or didn't want her around. Rose travels back in time by going into a root cellar. This book is called "The Root Cellar" because there is a root cellar where Rose enjoys being alone. Rose was never around kids her age , but her grandmothger told her that she was better off without them. She meets two children who are around her age and they create a strong bond. Rose and Sisan, who is one of her new friends, go on an exciting adventure they will remember for the rest of their lives!!!!!! The other child that Rose meets is Will. The book is a five star book to me and I suggest this book yo anyone who doesn't like reading. I hate reading and I loved this book. This book was so descriptive. When you read this book and think about it the book is so relaxing. If you close your eyes you will see the images in your mind it is so descriptive! So anyone can read it!!!!!
