About the Author
Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D., is a family physician, research psychologist, and acclaimed author of Why Gender Matters. He is founder and executive director of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education in Montgomery County, Maryland (NASSPE). Dr. Sax’s scholarly work has been published in a wide variety of prestigious journals, including American Psychologist, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Journal of the American Medical Association. This book will change your view of raising and educating boys!

As a high school teacher and principal for 30 years now, I read Dr. Sax's book with great interest and appreciation! He is not a theoretician, but has been "in the trenches" making first-hand observations through years of medical practice. He has coupled that with applicable scientific research that points to five conclusions that may not be "Politically Correct" -- nor easily adopted in our public school system -- but resonate for sure! Other reviews here - and even the cover of the book - delineate the five factors he develops in the book, but the list doesn't do justice to his premise. Please READ THE BOOK -- your thinking and understanding will be changed and you will be motivated to make what changes you can for the benefit of the upcoming generations of boys. I plan to buy several copies to give to families in my school and faith community! Thankfully, in the small school where I work, and through our church, we can implement many of his recommendations. After reading this book I feel motivated and empowered to do just that!

My son is in college now but it took (takes sometimes) quite a bit of pushing and motivation to get him there. I always wondered why he was not more excited about his future. My husband and are both educated and work really hard and in my mind this should have just rubbed off on our son. He has always seen us work, clean up after ourselves, keep our home organized, take care of our things etc. We have always included him in these things and all of the fun things we do because we can afford to. I just thought he would see this and understand this as he matured and he would want the same or even better. I was completely wrong . This child who was taught to help in the kitchen, clean his room and bathroom, and at a certain age do his own laundry seem to have lost all will to even move. Hygiene was out the door, studying became torture, he lumbered to do tasks assigned and then barely did them. His interest was video games and surfing the web. This book answered quite a few questions for me. I only wish I would have read this book when he was in high school. During high school his interest in studying and being good at academics just took a dive. He just did not care. My husband and I tried everything we knew how to try to keep him going. Not everything in this book applied to us but quite a bit of it did. As with anything you read you must use your judgment. I discussed this book with my son and even bought him a copy for his iPad because at his age I cannot force him to do anything but I can share knowledge so he can understand why he feels the way he does some times. The part about video games and other internet interaction really hit home with me. The part about going out and getting hands on experience really hit home with me also. I bought this book for my sister who has a 9 year old son. My hope is that this book will help her keep my nephew motivated.

Lots of food for thought

As the mother of four teenage males, I found this book fascinating and would highly recommend it to parents, teachers, and pretty much anyone else. There has been a lot of discussion of this topic, and I haven't read any other books on it, so I can't compare them, but this one offers a lot of food for thought, backed up by both research studies and the author's personal experiences.

I live in Kuwait, and (contrary to what people might think) we have some of the same things going on; girls work harder and do better in school, 2/3 of the university students are women, and women earn graduate degrees at a higher rate than men do. Many boys (and men) are spending a lot of time on video games, too; some are not getting jobs and getting married, which is a new phenomenon. On the other hand, schools are single-sex (except for a few private American and British schools), ADD/ADHD medications haven't become popular, and families still have strong ties. So it was interesting to compare and contrast the situations.

A must read for analog photographers

I borrowed this book from the kindle library and loved it. I will probably re read it many times. It has simple techniques that make a lot of sense and I'm a much more confident photographer. I will be purchasing this book and probably his second book about developing film. This is a truly no nonsense approach to photography.

Good, if you don't mind text only

I think this was a decent book to look into 35mm film photography. The info was good, but I think it would have benefited from actual photos to demonstrate the concepts. The author says he specifically didn't want to put photos in, but....it's a photography book which targets visual people. Also, what better way to validate the skill of the author than to have his own work displayed.

Fluvial deposits are a sensitive indicator of tectonic processes, and also carry subtle signatures of the climate at the time of deposition. They are the hosts for many petroleum and mineral deposits. This book is about all these subjects. The first part of the book, following a historical introduction, constructs the strati� graphic framework of fluvial deposits, step by step, starting with lithofacies, combining these into architectural elements and other facies associations, and then showing how these, in turn, combine to represent distinctive fluvial styles. Next, the discussion turns to problems of correlation and the building of large-scale stratigraphic frameworks. These basin-scale constructions form the basis for a discussion of causes and processes, including autogenic processes of channel shifting and cyclicity, and the larger questions of allogenic (tectonic, eustatic, and climatic) sedimentary controls and the development of our ideas about nonmarine sequence stratigraphy.

This book also examines at length autogenic sedimentary controls and discusses the tectonic and climatic controls of fluvial sedimentation and the effects of base level change on sequence architecture. The book contains a new classification of oil and gas fields in fluvial reservoirs, with descriptions of selected case examples. Profusely illustrated and with an extensive reference to the recent literature this textbook will be welcomed by the student and professional geologist alike.

"The Geology of Fluvial Deposits.." is an outstanding book on this matter. Mr. Miall, as usual, has got to achieve the main and crucial points regarding fluvial environment. This book is the best reference on fluvial sedimentation I have ever read.

Black and white only for illustrations and photographs

Good content other than the illustrations and photos, howver; the photos and diagrams are all in black and white.

The publishers and author here just printed the course notes from his lectures without much quality added. Alot of the diagrams are ok but the photographs of outcrops examples and some of the diagramatical models are difficult to see much of the details that would make the book much richer in content and aid in the understanding of the written material. The photos have been blurred or purposefully de-resolutioned by the printing process as well. This can't be observed in the graphic preview that Amazon provides because they show no content with photos or diagrams (only the cover, Title, preview, table of contents and bibliography pages).

Look, this is an age where computers and printers have the capacity to handle more detail provided by color saturation.

For 100 bucks you should get more. Just a money grab by the professor and the publishing company IMO. I'm disappointed.

This is a book that is being promoted as a first edition, even though the first edition came out in 1996. If this is a second edition with significant updates and additions, then that should be made clear in the book description.

A wonderful book

This book, and it's follow-up, 'Love and Awakening,' are wonderful books. The important take-away for me is that conflict in an intimate relationship is a reliable pointer toward my own 'stuckness' and emotional defenses. As such, conflict is a guide on my path of inner work to soften and become more loving. When viewed this way, relationship 'problems' can be welcomed as opportunities for growth and intimacy. That profound shift takes us away from 'what is wrong with my partner?' to 'what is happening in my heart?', a shift which opens the door to so much possibility. Of course, it takes commitment by BOTH parties in a relationship to use this paradigm to bear fruit. Just the same, there is something in this book for anyone who is looking for more love and intimacy. Wellwood's gentle and compassionate way of writing add to the books power.

One of the most profound books on relationships

I have read Journey of Heart well over a dozen times and I always come away with deeper insights and awareness into myself and how I interact in relationships. For the past 5 years, I have given a copy of this book to all of my friends, relatives and even strangers. Reading this book can be truly transformative. Unlike many other books in this field, it does not presribe a set of techniques. Welwood beautifully articulates the various aspects of romantic love - passion, conscious commitment, conditional and unconditional love etc. He weaves them together and demonstrates how this relates to our authentic spiritual development. Journey of the Heart will stand as an all-time classic as we pioneer into the evolution of conscious relationship. Only the Levines' book Embracing the Beloved explores these issues with such depth and sincerity.

Great sensible book for facing modern relationship dilemmas

I have read this book several times and never cease to come away with a new understanding. It has depth, compassion and useful information for moving through some of the modern relationship dilemmas that cause so many of us suffering.

John Welwood is a Ph.D. psychotherapist with a deep knowledge of world religions, especially Buddhism. He also has a lot of life experience and has written many books on a variety of topics including other relationship books.

One of the things I most like about this book is the author's ability to apply both modern psychological thought and Eastern philosophical wisdom to modern day problems. He does this in an easy to read fashion with a compassionate tone. He does not come across as omniscient, but rather as a fellow traveler on the relationship path of spiritual growth.

I believe relationships are probably the best or at least one of the best self-growth paths anyone could ever follow. John Welwood shows us how to hold them as such in this marvelously insightful book.

I also recommend his book called "Toward a Psychology of Awakening." This book is subtitled "Buddhism, Psychotherapy, and the Path of Personal and Spiritual Transformation." This would make a nice accompaniment to the book above, but the content is heavier and so is the style. However, it is packed with great information and it represents some of John Welwood's best writing.

I particularly like Welwood's insights on "spiritual bypassing" or escaping our psychological and emotional work by overly emphasizing the transcendent and dismissing the wisdom of embodied experience. I'm sure glad a guy who is writing relationship books holds this point of view because as anyone knows who has been in a committed relationship, there are lots of important ingredients to a good relationship beyond the spiritual considerations. The phenomenon of spiritual bypassing is explored very directly in "Toward a Psychology of Awakening."

More than delivers on the promise of urban farming –offers a useful philosophy as well

Curtis Stone succeeds extraordinarily well in the primary objective of this book. It is an attempt to tell the reader how to establish an urban farm. As the table of contents below indicates, he covers just about every aspect of the question. How to acquire the needed resources: urban land, primarily lawns and some equipment. He advises how to locate customers. He advises what crops to grow.

The book is intensely practical. Although he is known as "the bike farmer" in this Canadian town where he lives, and thus might be taken for a counter-culture sort, he is very forthright in saying that this identity is a marketing tool. It identifies him to his customers, and a bicycle is the cheapest means of transportation. The book is relentlessly focused on the bottom line rather than being wedded to any idealistic principles. Farming is a business, and he tells you how to optimize every aspect of the operation to make it profitable.

Obviously, locally grown organic food appeals to a well-defined sector of the population. Call them crunchy cons, yuppies, urban aesthetes, or whatever else, anybody familiar with the American or Canadian social scene will recognize his customer base. There are people who did not want mass-produced, mass marketed food, and are willing to pay a premium for fresh, pure, locally grown produce. Stone serves three sets of customers: local farmers' markets, Community Supported Agriculture, and restaurants. Community supported agriculture (CSA) are groups in the community that contract with a grower such as Stone to take produce over the course of a growing season or year. This provides a steady customer base and some predictability. The other outlets being more profitable, Stone devotes more space to describing how to establish oneself with farmers markets and restaurants.

Stone starts with several key insights. The first is that there is a broad market in North America for the kind of high quality, organic produce he is able to grow. The second insight is that lawns are a vast underused resource. There are 40 million acres of lawn in America. They account for between 30 and 60 percent of urban water use, and take a lot of time and gasoline to mow. Moreover, homeowners often see them as a pain and bother. Many lawn owners are happy to allow an urban farmer to use the land in exchange for some produce. A third is that urban land is very close to the consumer. A crop can go from field to table in a day. A fourth insight is that cities have their own ecology. There are warmer and better protected from wind than rural farms. Stone's approach all of these advantages to form a profitable business.

The most amazing observation I found in the book is how little land it takes to succeed in urban farming. A half-acre is the greatest area he discusses in the book. Even that small amount, he observes, requires hired help according to his system. Observe that quarter acre lots are extremely common in the suburbs, and you can conclude that it is not difficult to satisfy the land requirements.

Going to the bottom line, Stone writes about generating incomes in the five figure range, comparable with teachers and other professionals who will be among his customers. I will venture some observations that Stone only implies. A five figure income to an urban farmer is a lot more than it is to a teacher. The urban farmer doesn't need to spend a lot of money on clothes, a car to get to and from work, and the other trappings of a professional life. Being reliant on a bicycle (perhaps battery assisted, to pull around a Rototiller on a trailer) is an immediate money saver. A social life is built-in to an urban farmer's life. He is in constant contact with neighbors, chefs, customers in the farmers' market. Stone writes that he is often called upon to speak to community organizations. In the words of Nicholas Nassim Taleb he is "anti-fragile." He can handle customers coming and going, and he does not have a foundation of debt to be serviced. In fact, Stone is rather adamant on the subject of debt: don't use it.

There is a lot of value in the book even to somebody who does not want to implement Stone's model. I live on a third of an acre in Kyiv, Ukraine. We do not have much of the yuppie restaurant market here. You could never get seven dollars a pound for fresh spinach – one or two is more like it. However, the book will be useful to me in planning how to lay out our garden plots, how to use plastic tunnels to extend the growing season, how to control pests and weeds, and how to decide what to plant. I would recommend it to almost any gardener. Stone's bottom line perspective is useful even if you are only deciding what to grow for your own use.

Stone writes about the qualities one looks for in an employee "Paying for labor is worth it only if it allows you to do tasks that cannot be delegated as easily." He comes across as a fair boss, but not one who is in any way committed to socialist notions. Using an employee is a business decision. If they don't contribute to the bottom line, you don't need them.

An assessment of the capital that Stone himself brings to the business is illuminating. In terms of financial capital he is talking about $10,000, give or take. In terms of the human capital that he himself evidently brings, it includes yeoman farmer attributes that we would all like to impute to our ancestors, but we have to observe are rather rare today. Here is the human capital that Stone himself appears to possess:
• An innate sense of entrepreneurship. He looks for opportunities, and assesses each situation in terms of possible benefit.
• Hard work. Stone finds what he is doing interesting and is willing to put the time and to make it successful.
• Facility with tools. Like any farmer, Stone has to invent, construct, repair, and jury-rig equipment to get the job done.
• Gregariousness. Throughout Stone's day he comes in contact with many, many potential customers, and has the patience and the graciousness to talk with all of them.
• Fairness. He does what it takes to be fair to customers, employees, and all around him.
• Curiosity. Stone acquires the knowledge he shares in this book by talking to people, reading, and tinkering and figuring things out.
• Facility with numbers. Stone describes how he uses spreadsheets extensively to plan his operations and record his outcomes.
• Facility with language. He is in constant communication.
• Facility with computers and technology. This is essential to support work with numbers and language in today's world.

Stone's background prior to farming would not at first appear promising. He concluded after a decade and a half as a rock musician that that was not going to be his profession, so he looked for something he could do. He credits his father with an entrepreneurial streak that the son seems to have inherited. So, on the one hand, he started from nothing: no education in farming, no real experience, and precious little capital. On the other hand, in terms of human capital he was extremely well endowed. He had what it took to succeed.

Stone's story is a parable for Millennial youth. These kids emerge from the University chock-full of formal education but with no practical experience, and quite specifically, little notion of the fact that one earns a living by providing the kinds of goods and services that people are willing to pay for. What a blessing it would be to a 16-year-old with no discernible direction in life to get involved in something like urban farming and learn the self-discipline and the talents required to make a success of this fairly basic undertaking. It would prepare one for life. In our yeoman farmer ancestors, such an understanding of how things work was implicit. Stone provides a recipe for going back to these fundamental values.

This book is gold!

This book is gold! Heading into my first season as a market farmer this book has answered all of my questions about how i'm going to execute! So many highly useful tidbits of information such as dates to harvest in spring vs summer. Awesome!

There are a lot of gardening books out there, and this book could help you a bit with that, but what this book gives you an overview of how to start a farming business.
The level of detail for producing as efficiently as possible is here. The author does not want to spend time weeding, and has developed a system that works for him to minimize the unnecessary tasks. It is littered with real examples with actual numbers that Curtis Stone has done. Most authors shy away from giving financial details to this degree. Of course each situation is different, but giving real world examples I believe is very helpful.
If you want a book that just deals with growing vegetables, look elsewhere. There is a little bit of that in here, but this book is about high production in minimal space. Becoming efficient in a number of ways to alleviate time for the important tasks. Finding markets and the thought process of decisions of what items to grow.
I am happy to add this book to my library, and if you are after any of the things mentioned above, you will as well.

Mark Vonnegut on Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So

I wrote Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So because I was increasingly annoyed with my younger self, who had wrapped up everything with a bow. You can try but you don’t just get to get over mental illness at age twenty-five, go to medical school, write a book, get married and call it a wrap.

In the seventies I was in so in love with the medical model I almost thought I had invented it. "No shame. No blame." I was thrilled to not have my health be dependent on the sanity of society or the wellness of those around me. I was magnanimous about not wanting to credit insight or hard work or circumstances like the kindness of others. Now, the medical model has morphed into "Shut up and take your pills." What passes for care is medication, medication, and more medication, the purpose of which is only incidentally and occasionally to help the patient get a life.

Much of mental illness is genetic, but I’m now quite sure there are people with more or less the same genetics I have who never go crazy and others who never get well. As a kid who wrote a little and painted a little and played a little music, I certainly didn’t want my mental health riding on anything as flimsy as my creative abilities but, among other things, I’ve come to see that a willingness to write, paint and play music is more than a little important to progress and just trying to keep my feet under me.

It was the feeling that good things had happened to me in spite of myself, that I had a rich life that showed itself in my house and how I practiced pediatrics and how we lived as a family that made me want to write Just Like Someone Without Mental Illness Only More So. I’m grateful to the gritty clench-jawed kid who wrote The Eden Express, I think it’s an excellent book, but I’m glad I’m not him anymore.

Two not unrelated challenges--being novelist Kurt Vonnegut's son and suffering episodes of schizophrenia--shape, but don't confine, this mordantly witty, slightly subversive memoir. Vonnegut (The Eden Express) weathered a scruffy childhood with his as yet obscure dad ("I'll always remember my father as the world's worst car salesman") and was hospitalized for three bouts of psychosis in his 20s. He recovered and went on to Harvard Medical School and a successful career in pediatrics--then a fourth psychotic break upended him 14 years after the first one. (Taken to the hospital where he worked, he found himself greeting colleagues while tied to a gurney.) Vonnegut vividly conveys the bizarre logic of the voices and delusions that occasionally plagued him, which he finds not much nuttier than what passes for normalcy. (He's especially incensed by the insurance bureaucracies he thinks are ruining medicine.) His father's son, he writes with a matter-of-fact absurdism--"The patient who just died lies there quietly and everyone else stops rushing around trying to do something about it"--champions misfits, and attacks the system. All his own are Vonnegut's hard-won insights into the value of a humble, useful life picked up from pieces. Photos.

Afflicted with bipolar disorder, Vonnegut penned an account about his mental illness (The Eden Express, 1975) when in his twenties. He then forsook letters for a stethoscope; his occupation as pediatric physician backgrounds Vonnegut’s new memoir, which relays how he has coped with his condition while holding an important job and raising a family. Amid criticisms of red tape in medical practice, Vonnegut recounts the activities, such as painting and softball, that absorbed his nonwork energies, as well as his bibulous habits. Personal crisis arrived in 1985, when he decided he was an alcoholic, suffered “crack-up number four,” and was put in a straitjacket and hospitalized. He describes the episode psychically as being beset with voices and a torrent of thought that all seemed as though they were actually happening. Reentering the real world, Vonnegut resumed pediatrics, fondly recalling a brief stint at a free clinic in Honduras but also reporting a divorce and remarriage. Of intrinsic interest to readers involved in mental health, Vonnegut’s candid recollections will also attract the literati because, yes, his father was that Vonnegut. --Gilbert Taylor

Powerful and enlightening

Pretty much the sequel to "Eden ...", by the same author, and just as powerful. The impact comes from the matter-of-fact style of memoir writing of a "recovering" mental illness afflicted. I almost used the word "victim", but that would only be appropriate if the afflicted had gone inescapably to his death. This is the first person story of a subject who fumbled and struggled through the baffling onslaught of images and impulses of a mind going off the rails, and with the imperfect help of friends and mental health professionals gained day-to-day control of a potentially crippling end deadly mental disease. Clearly he had the advantage of a favorable social and economic situation, but in my opinion he has done a laudable job of making a worthwhile career to this point in time, and I wish him continuing success. Dr. Vonnegut in his continuing role as a pediatrician devotes a considerable amount of exposition about his medical practice to describing the eccentricities of pediatrics as well as a discussion of the inefficiencies and obstructions of the current American healthcare system which is driven by Insurance restrictions and complexity. This portion of the book alone is worthwhile reading as a candid chronicling of this controversial, costly and frustrating system we all must deal with.

This Vonnegut is My Clear Choice

What I like most about this book is Vonnegut's down-to-earth brilliance, which seems anything but brilliant. His gift with words makes it feel as though you're chatting with a good friend in a coffee shop. This friend is so reasonable and compassionate, you can't help but consume his every word, easily agreeing with it. You also can't help but wish he'd been your, or your children or grandchildren's, pediatrician. What I also like is that Mark is the Vonnegut whose reading I choose. It's more accessible, less insane to me, than his father's. {I'm giving it a 4 to leave room for Eden Express' ranking, and because I found some spots to be a bit choppy.} This one will change your thinking about mental health, the medical profession, and - perhaps - the world's greatest author whose son shines brightly under the radar.

Kurt Vonnegut's son, telling his own story of mental illness with bipolar disorder. He eventually goes on to Harvard Med, becomes a pediatrician, and finds purpose in his life. Interesting just because of the story, and his famous father, it holds the reader, but not because of the coherence of the writing, Ibe dies bit get a true sense of the burden of the illness, but you can get that in other books. Mark writes with an ironic tone, and nevertheless makes it rhtough medical school and into a practice benefiting society. This is enough to give hope to others with bipolar, but his particular set of circumstances is his own. At some months after I read this, I have only a spotty sense of the book, so it didn't stick.
