Charles Spence is the head of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory at the University of Oxford. Where have all the 60's gone?

Have you ever wondered where Bob Dylan got some of his inspiration?

Have you ever wondered what went on behind the scenes when the politically active youth culture was born in the 60's?

Starting with stories about Bob's relationships with the "Dust Bowl Balladeers" and wandering along with the concert tours and digging deep into the history of SNCC (Students Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) and SDS ( Students for a Democratic Society), and everywhere else that was relevant this book masterfully chronicles the connection between the songs and times of the 60's and beyond.

The reader is treated to a deep view of what was going on as many of Bob's most beloved songs were written. You are given a clear picture of why Bob was such an honest and faithful reflection of our times and has become America's favorite balladeer.

I have to say that I think the title is unfortunate, there is nothing "Wicked" about this messenger. The things he protests are outrageous things and he finds exactly the right words and the courage to sing them out with songs that can not be ignored. He also has made some of the most touching and romantic love songs that I have ever heard. I'm very glad to have been able to see some of the background behind his inspiration.

Finally, I understand why Bob was not at Woodstock, why he "went electric", what went on during the London tours, who was the "girl on that album cover", and many other things.

This is clearly a fascinating book that has helped me to better understand the times that I lived through even better.

Draws some important connections between Dylan's musical approach, its message, and how and why it affected his times

Wicked Messenger: Bob Dylan And The 1960s represents a revised, expanded edition of the 2003 hardcover Chimes Of Freedom, and is a recommended pick for Dylan fans and especially newcomers who missed Chimes and here will enjoy the benefit of a new chapter on his 2004 memoir and his 2003 film. Wicked Messenger shows that Dylan didn't turn away from his famous political music but instead changed the style of his message to address changing politics. In providing a concurrent social survey of the atmosphere of the U.S. during the 1960s, Wicked Messenger draws some important connections between Dylan's musical approach, its message, and how and why it affected his times.

A THOUGHTFUL AND STIMULATING BOOK

I came across WICKED MESSENGER in director Todd Haynes commentary for his film I'M NOT THERE. Since I seem to be one of the few people who enjoyed Haynes's take on Dylan's ever-changing persona, I decided to give the book a go. In WM, author Mike Marqusee skips the gossip and places Dylan within the historical context of the 60s and the decades before. BTW: This is not a "leftist" screed - unless recounting history is the domain of the Left. In any case, among its many virtues, WM examines the question of "authenticity" (versus hype), one of my longtime considerations. Since first hearing the FREEWHEELIN' album in 1963, and seeing Dylan in concert the same year, I've long thought that the burden of being "the spokesman of his generation" was an unfair and unrealistic burden. Perhaps Dylan's real importance is that he prompted us to think more deeply, more artfully, more poetically. Thinking people did not require him - or anyone - to be the voice of our generation; we employed our own voices - speaking from our minds and hearts. Another plus in WM is the great Bibliography, which I've already begun reading through; first up, John Lewis's extraordinary memoir, WALKING WITH THE WIND.

Wonderful Intermediate-Level Treatment

The author has assembled a wonderfully accessible study of time series analysis from the point of view of spectral theory. This book really bridges the gap between Brockwell & Davis' elementary text Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting and their advanced text Time Series: Theory and Methods.
The book is logically partitioned into two volumes: Volume I (Chapters 1-8) considers spectral methods for time series, while Volume II (Chapters 9-11) extends the results to multivariate time series.

Priestly tries to keep the prerequisites to a minimum, but the reader is well advised to do a little background preparation before jumping in to this book. For the required material in mathematical analysis of Fourier series, I recommend Rudin's Real and Complex Analysis. Although Priestly provide a brief introduction to probability theory, I'd recommend a more solid grounding, as can be found in Chung's A Course in Probability Theory. The elementary text by Brockwell & Davis Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting presents the needed material on time series analysis.

In Chapter 1, Priestly sets up the motivation for considering spectral analysis of stationary time series, and gives four practical reasons for the use of spectral methods.

The reader will find a brief, 70 page overview of probability theory in Chapter 2. If the terms don't look familiar on a quick scan of this chapter, you'll want to get more detail from Chung's text before proceeding with Priestly.

Chapter 3 introduces stochastic processes and time series. Stationary time series are defined, as is the auto-covariance and autocorrelation function. ARMA(p,q) models are introduced and some basic results are established about these models.

The core results from spectral analysis are given in Chapter 4. The two main results are the Wiener-Khintchine Theorem (characterized those functions which can be the autocorrelation function of a stationary process), and the Spectral Representation Theorem for Stationary Processes.

Chapter 5 gives a really nice treatment of ARMA(p,q) model specification and estimation. The author motivates the well-known conditional maximum likelihood techniques for estimating coefficients, and gives really insight into the development of methods of order estimation using the information criterion ala Akaike (i.e. AIC) and Schwartz.

The next section consists discuss spectral estimation and consists of Chapters 6, 7, and 8. Chapter 6 tackles the theoretical issues surrounding estimated the spectral density of a stationary process. The author does a good job explaining the shortcomings of the periodogram as an estimator, as well as the need for tapering or 'windowing'. Chapter 7 continues along this theme by giving empirical guidance for selecting windowing schemes. Chapter 8 discusses the thorny problem of posed by processes containing both a continuous and a discrete spectrum.

The last part of the book comprised Volume II and extends the results of the first volume to cover the case of multivariate time series. Applications considered in this volume include problems of filtering and prediction. In the last chapter of the book, Priestly presents some of his own research on "evolutionary spectra" which is an attempt to extend the analysis to non-stationary processes.

The book is written in monograph style; as such there are no formal exercises. However, the author gives lots of examples using real-world datasets. Working through the examples serves to reinforce the reading. The author states several theorems, but usually prefers to justify these results with a heuristic argument. On occasion, a formal proof is given, but there are no end-of-proof markers (e.g. QED). The reader must take care to determine where the proof ends and the discussion resumes.

A good mathematical discussion of Spectral Analysis

The book covers a good deal of spectral analysis with all the details and results and applications. It starts with probability theory and random processes, definition of Fourier series, spectrums, estimation using spectral methods and more advanced topics. The book focuses on frequency domain methods, though in parts it discusses time-series models like AR, ARMA, ... but in a frequency domain context. The book is rather mathematical and urges the reader to have some math background or familiarity with system theory and filters. It discusses the results for both continuous and discrete time processes, though the emphasis is more on the continuous time. The discussions are done neatly but can be cumbersome or unnecessary for people who just want to use a method. It is more a book for those who want to get to the bottom of the methods with a deep understanding of concepts.

I found this book useful and rather complete and I am using that in a lot of my own projects.

Needs more examples but still very good.

I thought James D. Hamiltons book Time Serives Aanlysis was better. It was easier to understand and covered more material, including VAR models and State Space. Still this was and is an excellent book, and it goes into details about multivariate statistics that are not contained in Hamilton's book. I have the same complaint about this book as Hamilton's. Not enough examples. I compare these two books to those of Hosmer and Lemeshow's Applied Logistic Regression where there were nurmerous examples and problems to solve based on data they had provided.

About the Author
Katherine L. Adams is Professor of Speech Communication at California State University, Fresno, where she received a Meritorious Promise and Performance award in 1989. She has served as their Graduate Coordinator since 1989. She received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Utah under the direction of B. Aubrey Fisher. She has authored four instructor’s manuals in interpersonal and small group communication and most recently, this group communication book with Gloria Galanes. She has published articles in the areas of conversational analysis and interpersonal communication. Currently she is an associate editor for Communication Reports and The Western Journal of Communication. She participates, at all levels, in the Western States Communication Association and Speech Communication Association and teaches in the areas of interpersonal communication, communication theory, small group communication, and research methods.

Gloria J. Galanes is Associate Professor of Communication and Mass Media at Southwest Missouri St. University and has received the University’s Faculty Excellence in Teaching and the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member awards.

Great Combination of Theory and Practice.

Over the past several years I've had to read several text books, especially those having to do with speech communication. The majority of these speech communication books I have had to read are long, dry, and dull. They tend to be filled with all sorts of theories and very little actual real-life experience examples or practice. COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS isn't like that and does one of the best jobs for a textbook of combining the theories behind small group communication with vivid, real-life examples to illustrate the ideas. The book lays out the format for working in small groups, explains how and why small groups are formed, the decisions that small groups have to make, problems that small groups face, and principles of how a group can work together to complete their project and make a presentation. Terms are defined in easy-to-understand language and examples are relevant and applicable. The book is fairly easy to read and unlike most textbooks I have forced myself to read, I actually enjoyed reading COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS. I would recommend this text for any small group communication class or anyone interested in the field of small group communication.

amazing readings are easy to learn with

I love this book. It has great readings and vocabulary, structure lessons that are easy to follow. You do need the CD to follow most of it, if you are not using it for class. If you want this for a class, the teacher should have the CD. If you need it for self, study, you will need the CD.

An excellent compendium on work physiolgy

I received both my B.S., and M.S. in Exercise Biochemistry from Univ. of Mass, and Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, respectively. My former advisor studied under Brooks at Berkely (He received his Doctorate there). In any event the approach our department undertook towards exercise biochemistry/physiology was at the cell and molecular level. Brooks text was central to the program. What is great about the book, is that it explains complicated biochemical processes in easy to understand language and places it in the context of applied physiology. The book stacks up to classic texts like Molecular Biology of the Cell (Albert, Bray, Lewis), and many of the classic biochemistry texts. In my opinion it is far superior to texts by McArdle & Katch, or Textbook of Work Physiology (author escapes me, for now).

Carolyn Meyer is an assistant professor in Ryerson University's Department of Professional Communication. About the Author
BEN MILLER is an award-winning filmmaker and author. He is a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, was the winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Grant for screenwriting, and has worked for legends such as Martin Scorsese and Roger Corman. He was the producer of the film�Rage and Discipline,�about pugilists in New York City. Miller's movies have appeared on Walt Disney Video, Sony Video, BET, HBO, Cinemax, and the Encore Channel. He currently serves as chef de salle at the Martinez Academy of Arms, one of the last schools in the world still teaching an authentic living tradition of classical fencing. He is active in the Association of Historical Fencing, and has written several articles for them focusing on the fencing and dueling of the American colonial period.

This complexity plays out in a fascinating narrative chronicling a truly amazing life rich with romance

With eloquent prose and concise description, Ben Miller introduces us to a remarkable character of the nineteenth century whose adventurous life and commitment to chivalry embody the elements of fictional heroes from bygone days. Miller’s entertaining introduction seamlessly draws a portrait of Colonel Thomas Monstery - a man both stereotypically masculine and traditional, as well as extremely progressive for the age he lived in. This complexity plays out in a fascinating narrative chronicling a truly amazing life rich with romance, peril and poetic justice. The content of Monstery’s manuscript will be of great interest to any history enthusiast, as it includes detailed descriptions of ancient arts which have all but died. An exciting added element is that one can gain further insight into their history and application by looking up Mr. Miller’s mentor at the Martinez Academy of Arms who is apparently one of the last known fencing masters with a direct lineage to many of the European martial arts similar to those mentioned in Monstery’s work. A sensational read, I highly recommend "Self Defense for Ladies and Gentlemen" and eagerly look forward to future literature by this author.

Long lost cousing of Bartitsu

This is not a poorly copied old book, this is the fruit of careful research and is well worth the money.

Are you interested in the way people use to walk with the head high? Well, being fit and capable of defending yourself or the innocent, if the need arises, has a lot to do with that.

It appears that the gentleman of old not only were elegant, cultured and confident, they also knew how to kick you know what. I wonder how many of today's intellectuals are able to act like men when the situation requires it.

With the exception of the jiu jitsu part, this is similar to the bartitsu canon, with the use of fists, kicks, walking sticks, etc. The similarity goes so far, as to the point, that both systems were forgotten and survived only in the form of popular press articles.

In any case it gives food for thought in this age of lose moral and lack of ideals.
