Romance in the Snow!
By brelyea
Snowbound won the RITA award for Janice Kay Johnson. It is a complex story which weaves the concerns of a badly damaged vet; a strongly motivated teacher; and a group of high achieving high school students when the teacher and the students are stranded durning a major snow storm at the mountain lodge run by the vet. The students are smart enough to recognize the attraction between their teacher and their host, and when the storm is over and they return to school; it is the students who keep the lines of communication open.

Very cute.

A lot of romance novels focus on the female, since this is mostly a female audience. However, I really enjoyed all the detail she put into John's character.

Since I have experience dealing with someone who came back from Iraq, I know how hard it really can be. I know for a fact that they would rather have someone who did not know them before to talk to. I really liked how Janice made John's PTSD seem real.
Fiona did not have a lot of back story, but I was fine with that. Again, I really think the main plot was dealing with the heros issues and not the heroines, like most romance novels.

As far as them falling for each other so fast and so sudden, I am fine with that too. I am romantic enough at heart, that I believe when you meet the right one, it can be a sudden attraction. She awoke his feelings, she saw what a good man he was even through his standoffish manners.

Overall, a good story. I will check out more of Janice Kay Johnsons work.

Just yummy

I started this on a 1.5-hour plane trip. I figured I would enjoy it and keep reading or forget it by the time the plane deboarded and go on with my life. I am not a huge fan of the Harlequin categories generally, but every now and then I hit a good one. And this one is making me want to do a major glom of this author's work.

I kept reading. I so enjoyed it.
The writing was wonderfully evocative of feelings. You could feel the physical and mental pain of the protags, the machinations they went through to get where they ended up. There was not "insta-love cures all" ending. They each had to work through issues to get to the end.

The plot devices were just that, plot devices; but they were well thought out and effectively used.

The editing was nice and tight. And oh, not a misspelling in sight. I know this was not a self-pub, but gee, so nice not to see a misspelling on every page.

The kids were not moppets, but they were effectively used. I think she might have had a few too many, but it is all good. I actually have a child that competes in these academic/quiz bowl-type events so I know a lot of kids are needed so that was authentic at least, if a bit unwieldy in the story itself.
