THE FIRST FULL-LENGTH BIOGRAPHY OF THE POPULAR TV PSYCHOLOGIST

The authors point out in this 2004 book (that admittedly was not written with the approval of Dr. Phil) that after he felt 'betrayed' by a teacher in 5th grade, "McGraw claims that, from this moment on, he never again felt comfortable in any academic setting... By his own admission, he likely wouldn't have made it through high school had it not been for the discipline of participating in sports." (Pg. 18)
They note about the 2002 revelation of his unsuccessful first marriage, "Some listeners had a hard time believing that McGraw even has an ex-wife. Oprah's beloved, tell-it-like-it-is guru had a failed marriage? The man who complains that America's divorce rate 'is just ridiculous'?... Yes, THAT Dr. Phil is the ex-husband of a woman who decided to spill the beans on their marriage." (Pg. 40-41) They add, "The marriage was annulled by a Kansas court in December 1973. Neither saw each other after the split until their 30-year high schoool reunion in Kansas City, the first either one had attended, as far as classmates can recall." (Pg. 49)
Dr. Phil later admitted, "McGraw ultimately concluded that one-on-one counseling just wasn't his calling... 'I'm just not cut out for it,' McGraw explains. 'You know, I did it for a while. I paid my dues. I've been there and sat in the office with the therapist couch and done all that. But I don't have the temperament for it. A lot of people are looking for a baby-sitter. And I'm not very good at baby-sitting." (Pg. 82-83)
After he was "discovered" by Oprah during the infamous "Mad Cow Disease" trial [his jury-consulting firm was hired by her during trial preparation], "Before long, McGraw was getting real on 'Oprah' every Tuesday, becoming her first guest with a permanent recurring appointment. McGraw's brand of therapy was less twelve-step than one-liner. McGraw said, 'You either get it, or you don't,' and Winfrey's audience loved it... And the Winfrey/McGraw good cop/bad cop balance worked perfectly. Winfrey's kindly manner counteracted McGraw's antagonistic and in-your-face opinions." (Pg. 125)
They add, "of all the authors Winfrey has supported over the years, perhaps none has benefited more than Phil McGraw... when Winfrey urged her popular regular Tuesday guest to write a book of his own in 1998---accompanied by a clear intent to endorse it---you could say he was already halfway to the bestseller lists before putting a single word on paper. If there was such a thing as a surefire hit in publishing, this was it." (Pg. 131) A ghostwriter who helped with McGraw's book Relationship Rescue said, "McGraw hit the stage culturally at the perfect time for someone like him... The self-help world was just coming off a long love affair with this inner child movement... They were all touchy-feely, sensitive, gentle types of approaches and the audience for it was getting tired... And here comes McGraw." (Pg. 133)
They point out that audience members of his show are required to sign a release form which includes the statement, "I represent that I do not suffer from a mental illness and am not currently under psychiatric care. I further acknowledge that Dr. Phil McGraw... does not and will not administer individual, group, or medical therapy; and his advice, opinions, or statements should not be considered individual, group, or medical therapy of a substitute or replacement for those therapies." (Pg. 156)
This book is absolute "MUST READING" for anyone wanting to know more about Dr. Phil (albeit its lack of "approval").
